My transmission is leaking at the rear tail shaft housing on the lower passenger side. It is also leaking at the speedometer cable connection, but I don't have the cable connected. I have not run the transmission as it is a new (rebuilt) transmission. I can wipe away the fluid and watch it begin to seep through the housing. Any suggestions?

put in the proper "O" rings
and tailshaft seal.

What, did they fill it to the gills with tranny fluid or something? A little bit is to be expected to lube everything, but, if you're seeing it seep out, I would refer to post #1 and make sure they rebuilt it with the right o-rings
and seal...Good luck!

I put 8 quarts in preparation to start my engine for the first time since it's rebuild. The leak that concerns me is where the tail shaft housing bolts to the main body of the transmission. Could it be that I have too much fluid in the transmission?

For starters, I'd follow the standard procedure for filling the transmission which includes running it until hot. Then see if you still have leaks.

Since it will be a day or two before I start the engine, I drained the fluid so the leak is gone for the time being. I will get the engine running and then fill the transmission and run through the gears by raising the rear wheels and see what happens.

Uhhh.. I'd put fluid in the tranny BEFORE I started the engine.. Don't think you want to smoke the torque converter...
