In my search for my next car I keep finding cars that are perfect EXCEPT for one thing or another..
Well I found one with an auto trans but I REALLY want a 4-speed (or 5 or 6 smile.gif )
How hard to convert it over? Anyone make a "kit" to do this? I know its pretty easy to convert a manual to an auto but ive never tried the other way.. any help would be appreciated..
TIA

If you convert to one of the manual transmissions that originally came in these cars, it is a very straightforward and simple swap. Everything is pretty much a bolt in affair, the only exception that comes to mind would be cutting a hole in the tunnel for the shifter.
If you swap to a 5 or 6 speed, it is a fairly common swap as well. Those who have done it (not me) should have plenty of advice to offer.

I swapped a PG out for a Muncie in my 67 and never cut a bigger hole. I just got the correct Hurst Comp Plus shifter for the console.

Steve,
I'm right in the middle of converting my 69 from a power glide to a M 20. Like BPOS said,it is fairly straight forward. You can buy all of the parts you need from just about every vendor there is. So far the only modification I have made to anything is to tap 3 5/16 x 18 holes that were allready in my sub frame for the bracket that holds the bell crank. I still have to cut the hole in the floor for the shifter. The hole was allready in my firewall with a cover over it for the cluch rod. I can see I'm going to have to move some brake lines around because I converted my car to disc brakes several years ago, but that should not be a big deal. From previous posts I learned I might have to do a little extra work to hook up the spring return for the cluch pedel because of the headers. I bought almost everything new, except for the scatter shield. I think if I were to do it again I would spend more time looking for good used parts. To make it look and perform properly be prepaired to spend around $800 to $1000 bucks if you buy new.
With all this said, I am in the MIDDLE of doing this, but I don't look for any big problems. Besides if I do run into some ( and there always is )I got these guys to help me out. ;)
For your kit question, there are kits for various parts of the conversion but not one giant kit for the whole thing.
I highly recommend you buy a factory assembly instruction manual for your car. Tons of good info graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Opps, forgot to mention the price of the tranny when I was throwing out numbers there. graemlins/clonk.gif graemlins/clonk.gif I paid $300 for my M 20 and about another $200 rebuilding it.
