I have a very nice rebuilt M22 munice that is a 71-72 model. It has the fine spline input and TH400 output. If I remember correctly this trans is 1 inch longer than the 69 M21 that is currently in there. What do I need to get and/or do to make it fit in my 68 Camaro. My Camaro is an original 4spd car with no console. The current shifter mounts on a plate that mounts to the trans cross member. Will this set-up still work? Or do I need to buy a shifter that mounts to the trans like the 69 and later models?

I don't believe that that trans is any longer than the 66-71 versions were. You need to change over from the 27 spline yoke to the 31 spline "Turbo 400" style part. You will also need to change the clutch disc. The older muncies used a 10 spline input shaft and the later ones have a 23 spline input shaft.

You may need to buy a shifter installation kit for the later tail housing. I'm not sure if the mounting holes are in the same place as your old Municie.

Good Luck,

Matt, I have done quite a few of these swaps, and i have always had to shorten the driveshaft approx. 3/4", you should always measure each car as sometimes ride height etc. will affect driveshaft length. The big output Muncie trans is exactly 3/4" longer than the earlier version. As far as the shifter, with the factory 68 Muncie crossmember mounted, the only thing you will have to change is the shifter tags. Hope this helps.

OOPs, also the clutch disc as noted.

Thanks for the replys. I knew about the clutch disk and rear Th400 yoke. I was not sure about the shifter. I will check the drive shaft too when i get the trans in the car.
