View Full Version : giving up soon, chatter from drivetrain/clutch
Royal Blue 69 Z28 Sep 18th, 04, 12:02 PM OK, Brand Newbie here, so take it easy on me... I have a 69 Camaro (Fake Z) with a 350-4 bolt from a 74 Chevy dump truck. I had the engine rebuilt professionally years ago, no problem with the engine. I'm on my 2nd transmission, original was a saginaw and now I have put a Super T-10 in the car from a 75 Trans AM. The drivetrain chatters a lot when releasing the clutch, especially when going forward, not as bad in reverse. I have a new clutch set up from Hays, a machined flywheel, a new pilot bearing etc. I checked the input shaft for "wobble" it was fine. The problem lessened somewhat after I put the new clutch set-up in, but still persists. The engine mounts are new, but I didn't buy anything special. The tranny mount is good, not broken. The u-joints are new. I noticed that the front of the driveshaft where it slips into the trans "shakes" when starting to let the clutch out, (there IS a little play there, but I had the same problem with the Saginaw unit so didn't think this was a problem). I have rebuilt the clutch bellcrank on the engine, but it seems to be angled a little towards the rear of the car.(Could I have the wrong engine mounts, I had to add some washers between the mounts and the frame brackets?) I'm just looking for advice, because I have a Turbo 400 ready to go in if I cannot resolve this annoying clutch release chattering.....Thanks in advance for all of your advice/recommendations.....Rich graemlins/sad.gif
RickD Sep 19th, 04, 02:32 AM Hey, another neighbor! I was just talking to my tranny builder yesterday at the Rhinebeck Goodguys show (raining so hard I had a private show almost). He just relayed his experience with his GTO and had the same experiences. Went to a Centerforce setup and worked fine. Not what you may want to hear, though. Im personally not a fan of reconditioned flywheels. Last year I did a Centerforce II billet flywheel, pressure plate and disk with a new M22. Very smooth. It's nice to shift! Welcome aboard a fine site.
oger Sep 19th, 04, 10:28 AM Do your motor mounts fit tight on the frame mounts? If you get the wrong combo the motor mount will slide back and forth on the frame mount and cause a chatter problem.
67CruiseMasterCamaro Sep 19th, 04, 10:32 AM Bad pilot bushing???
Royal Blue 69 Z28 Sep 19th, 04, 11:54 AM It's a new pilot bushing, and I checked it with a "mike" but I like "ogers" thoughts...I had to shim the motor mounts, (they are new cheap mounts), I put a few washers in between each mount and the frame brackets where the long bolt slides through. They are tight, but maybe they are just no good like I have them....any suggestions on GOOD motor mounts, and while I'm at it, I will change the tranny mount...Thank you....Rich
Royal Blue 69 Z28 Sep 19th, 04, 11:58 AM Rick, Thanks for the welcome.....I think with all you guys helping, I wont have to put the Automatic in......Rich
William Sep 19th, 04, 12:26 PM If you have '69 frame brackets and '67-'68 motor mounts the engine is too low. This will alter the angle of the driveshaft.
The correct '69 motor mount is a tight fit on the '69 bracket. Shimming won't help.
Royal Blue 69 Z28 Sep 19th, 04, 05:33 PM Ok Thanks, I'm ready to buy the correct mounts, anyone got a good source??? Thanks for all the help.....Rich
RickD Sep 20th, 04, 03:02 AM I bought my mounts from Rick's.
