Hey All.
I've a '67 camaro with a 327 / powerglide combo. I want to swap to a manual and need to start gathering all the necessary parts. Do you know if I can get a bellhousing that will run an 11" clutch with my small block that I can use if I trade up to a big block later? I'd like to get parts that would work with the swap if possible. If you know and killer deals on parts out there, I'd appreciate any info you can kick my way. Oh yeah, I'm going with the Tremec.
Thanks,
Aaron

11" bellhousing casting number is-3899621. This will work with both small block and big block. Also any Corvette bellhousing from 68-82 will work as long as it has the little half moon kickout for the starter. The 621 bellhousing is used on the corevette until about 76? then the casting number changes.

RSZMJT,

So do all 11" bellhousings come with the casting number "3899621"? Will ANY 11" bellhousing work with SB or BB or do I need to know what year it was produced? I've been looking on ebay and not many list casting numbers. Thanks so much for your quick reply!

No , all 11" bellhousing do not come with the 621 casting number, the later Corvette housing has i think only a 6 digit casting number, sorry i do not know it. The 621 was actually used from 66-76? Later model Camaro,s 76-81 also used a 6 digit 11" bellhousing, as did some Nova,s etc. Be carefull not to use a Malibou ( 76-?) bellhousing as the fork pivot point is lower. All the above mentioned bellhousings will fit a BB or SB. Also be carefull not to use a truck bellhousing, it is indentified by a square type section directly below the lower trans bolts, the reason is it has a bigger register ( hole) where the front trans brg retainer goes in. This cause lots of grief because the trans will not be on centreline, because only the bolts locate the trans. Hope this helps.

RSZMJT,

This helps a TON. Now I know what I'm looking for. If anyone knows where I can start collecting parts for the swap let me know. Otherwise, I'll trust my luck w/ ebay.

I had a fella tell me that I can't go to the track unless I get a blow-proof bellhousing like lakewood or something. Is this the case? I'm not much of a track racer. Street is my main use, but I might like to be able to run the track once in a while. Do they check out that kind of thing? Do they make a "621" type bellhousing that's scatterproof?

Try Lakewood for a scatter shield, a division of Edelbrock.

will a 697 casting work as well?

if memory serves me correctly- according to NHRA, you only need a "blowproof bellhousing" if you run a solid lifter cam. if you just have the mild 327 yet, i don't think clutches exploding at 7000 rpm will be much of an issue, but you never know...

I had an original 69 403z28 bellhousing in mine, because I didn't want the hassle of dealing with the scattershield and I only had a mild 350/330ho motor with an m-21. Needless to say my freshly (professionally)rebuilt tranny let go with only 300 miles on it. Pieces or the transmission exited through the bottom of the scattershield, due to an input bearing failure. I was only shifting at 5500 when it scared the hell out of me. Scattershields can be a pain but I highly recomend them if you plan on racing the car, regardless of what the rules say. Good Luck with your project.
