I should start with little background on the car. I have a 67 conv. with mono leaf on the rear. I have a posi rear out of a multi leaf car that I want to instal. My dilema is whether to weld new mono leaf mounts on the rearend or convert the car to multi leaf. When looking at the car it looks like the shock mounts will move closer to the tire if I go with the multi leaf. Does anyone know if this is a problem. The car has a 383 with a 350 trans. It does not get beat on much at all, but I still worry about wheel hop. I am also worried about ride height. It sits very close to original and I would like to keep it that way. Any pointers or opinions are greatly appreciated. I am leaning a little toward changing the spring mounts for the ease of installation. The rearend I am installing is an 8.5 so changing the carrier is not an option.

I would think that it would be better to keep an original Mono Leaf 8.2 Posi diff in it rather than the later 8.5" differential. If you are looking for one I know that there are a few listed on Team Camaro and one is an original 69 unit complete with springs and all. Here is a link to the page. #3894859NF GM 10 Bolt Posi (http://www.camaros.net/cgi-bin/cyber/classifieds.cgi?search_and_display_db_button=on&db_id=25826&exact_match=on&photo_size=full) I would have just emailed you about this but you do not show an email address in your profile.

There is another option. You can use spacers to make up the difference in the thickness of the springs. I would not cut the brackets off and weld the others on unless you just really want to do it that way. The heat from cutting and welding can warp the axle tubes a little. I would change the springs before cutting and welding.

The only problem is that the spring perches on the 8.5 hsg are not at the correct width for a early F Body car, and WILL have to be moved. Most all of the repo companies handle the repop mono OR multi leaf weld on spring perches, but As big gear head posted the heat from welding and cutting can distort the axle tubes. Best leave that to a shop that does this type of work, if this is too much trouble, maybe just put a 8.2 Posi etc. into your housing. Just my 2 bits worth.

What did this 8.5 rear end come out of? If it came out of a Nova then you are fine, but if it came out of a second generation Camaro then you will have to move the spring mounts because they are about 3 inches too far apart.

Sorry. I forgot to mention that the rearend was out of a Nova. The current spring perches are in the right spot and the rear is the correct width. I decided to stay with the mono leaf and ordered new spring perches from NPD today. I guess the shock mounts and ride height helped make my decision. The differential housing was sent today to be sand blasted. When it returns I am going to have the new perches welded on. Hopefully everything will go right and it will be a direct bolt in. I am looking forward to going from a 2.73 rear gear to a 3.73. The car actually has a powerglide in it right now but a 350 will be going in at the same time as the differential. Thanks for the replies.

Be sure you clean that thing out REAL well. Sand blasting makes a mess inside the housing and is VERY hard to get clean.
