I am considering changing out my Powerglide transmission for a 2004r transmission in my small block 68. I understand that I must use a TH400 crossmember. Is the TH400 crossmember the same for a 67-69 and a second generation TH400 crossmember? Thanks for any replies.

You don't HAVE to use the T400 crossmember, but if you have access to a welder, you can save about $75-80 and have a little fabrication fun in the process. Bowtie Overdrives sells a readymade bolt-in crossmember for $149. Here are a couple of links. Not sure if the second gen crossmember is the same as the first gen.
