Is there a reason that the u-bolts (or even the u-joint girdles) that are used to retain the u-joint in the rear yolk don't come with locking nuts rather than the traditional split lock washers?

My guess is that it comes down to money. If a locking nut is $.05 more than a standard nut and lockwasher - and 4 per car x 3,000,000 cars per year(or whatever), the factory can accomplish the same goal and save money. This is strictly a guess.
