Could you guys that know gm 10 bolt posi's tell me if this is a posi unit or an open diff? I was gonna toss it in the trash and figured maybe I should pop the cover and have a look. I think the two small springs in the center are a tell tale sign of a posi unit but am not sure. Is it worth anything? both axles turn in the same direction when spinning it and it counts 3 yoke revolutions for one axle rev. Heres the link its on page 3

The gears are on page 3.
you could direct link the gear photo itself too but its a HUGE file. We prefer photos be around 100K and maybe 880x660 so the dial up folks can get them fairly quickly too.
I dont know posi's very well but that looks like a peg leg to me, Im sure the guru's will chime in soon.

Thanks for straightening me out. I think I had to many drinks over the last two evenings. BTW Ive been trying to figure out how to import a pic direct to a post for about two years and still cant do it. Do I need to use webshots as a link to put it in the post? Im confused.
Well we have one peg leg and one definate posi- Rust, what is telling you that its a posi, please educate me, is it the springs?
Thanks Rich

Yes, that's a posi carrier.
No, Webshots doesn't allow directly posting pictures in posts.
Try this place here.... he's a TC mamber and lets us use his server: http://www.bartonekdragracing.com/upload.php
PhotoBucket.com allows directly posting pics in your posts also.

The springs and the plates they're wedged between are a dead giveaway that it's a posi. They preload the side gears which have friction discs between them and the carrier. Unless it's a cone type which uses cone shaped side gears that fit into a tapered seat in the carrier. The disc type is the better of the two.

It looks like a posi to me, but it could be a standard differential that someone has put the preload plates and springs in. Check to see if you can see the clutch plates behind the axle gears. It is probably a 3 series posi, so it should have the casting number EDB30116 next to the bearing on the end opposite of the ring gear. The 8.2 10 bolt posi is a little rare because most people who got a high performance Camaro also got a 12 bolt.

Thanks for all the help guys!
BGH- I can make out the 30116 but cant really see the prefix letters. One more question, is it rebuildable
Thanks Rich

Yes, it is an Eaton posi and is rebuildable.
