View Full Version : Can I beef up my 10bolt to last?

Just wondering if I can upgrade my 10bolt enough where I can use it without killing it. My 396 is pushing roughly 450hp.

Would like to get some nice tires one day and take it to the strip. smile.gif

The 8.2 10 bolt is not the best rear end out there. How long it lasts depends on how you intend to drive it, what transmission you have and what tires you use. If you have a automatic transmission and street tires it can be built to last pretty well. If you have a 4 speed or run slicks it probably will break. You can upgrade it to a new Eaton posi and a good set of after market axles and make it stronger, but this will only go so far.

Yeah I would rather not take any risk if you think its too much for a 10 bolt. I would like to throw some slicks on and take it to the drag strip.

Anyone have any recommendations on a good company or brand rear end to go with? Ive been looking around locally, but havent been able to find anything lately.

Thanks

Josh, go to a yard and get a used 8.5 10 bolt from a 73 or 74 nova. then rebuild it. I'm pushing 425 with my mouse and I've been chewing up the ring and satelite gears in mine. Just waiting for the end of the month to order the eaton posi to boost mine up from being an open rearend.

The Nova 8.5 10 bolt can be built almost as strong as the 12 bolt, and it is a bolt in for the early Camaro. You can use a 30 spline Eaton posi and a set of 30 spline axles. This increases the strength quite a bit. It should be able to handle what you want to do, and it will be a few hundred dollars cheaper than a 12 bolt. The '72 Nova 8.5 has a yoke that will probably work with your drive shaft. Sometimes the drive shaft has to be shortened about 1 inch to work with the 8.5.
