Hi, I was having a problem with my 68 4 speed, there is no third. I can put it into third but it pops out and makes the worst grinding noise 9 times out of 10. At any RPM or temp. Are there any adjustments I can make or should I just bite the bullet and take it to be rebuilt$$$. Thanks a bunch

Try and adjust the shifter if you're able. Is it a Hurst competition plus, if so go to the mr. gasket website and the instructions should be there.
I'd try this before you pull the trans.

Assuming that your trans is a muncie, I would pull the linkage off the trans, pop the trans in second gear, and pull off the side cover. This is pretty easy if you get the car on jackstands or a lift. Look at the shift forks and see how worn they are, There will be wear on the tips, but there should be no wear on the inner curved areas. Pay special attention to the cam stops attached to the side cover. Make sure they are doing their job. Put the trans levers in neutral and using a 1/4 inch drill as a gauge in the shifter, do an adjustment on the linkage. Thats about all you can do without pulling out the trans.

If the forks are worn, be sure & check the grooves on the synchronizer sleeve for wear where the fork rides. If it's worn, it will still tend to pop out even if you replace the fork.
