I have stock 8.2 non posi rear in 68.
I am looking at Eaton 8.2 Posi unit.
Will it handle 430HP?

I wouldn't give it a steady diet of hooking hard with slicks. It should live fine on the street, though. (Cripes, I hope, cause that's what I have!)

Thanks,
I hear Eaton are the best units.
Is this the same as you have?
Was it easy to install? jUst drop in?

I am just going to use it on the street to have some fun.
Thanks

Mine's been working well in the '69 (about 370hp) with mostly street and a little non-slick strip action. Drop it in... not quite but close. I'd think you'd want new carrier bearings and you'll have to set the backlash. Measure with a dial indicator before removing the old carrier then duplicate it with the new unit. Best to establish the carrier bearing pre-load before bolting the ring gear to the unit. Lots of info to be had by doing a search of the subject. If you have a dial indicator and a torque wrench you should be able to do it. Also, check with "big gear head" aka Freddie as he can supply the Eaton unit and bearings (probably already pressed on) and as a bonus an unlimited amount of installation advice.

P.S. If you're thinking of changing gear ratios then that's a whole different story from a installation, cost and practicality stand point.

Thanks rojo,
I have the tools
Sounds like I need to do a little homework on the install to get it right, especially the bearing preload sounds important. I'll do some research.
I found one on ebay for $319 from "gearsareus"
but have not purchased yet.
Is this a good price?

Thanks for the info.

I have the 8.2 with 3.73 and Eaton posi. I only run street tires and it has held up to 400+ with no problem.

Yes that sounds like a real good price provided that's the "New Verison" unit and not some old stock. As far as determining the difference I wouldn't know. Here again big gear head would have that knowledge. Check back in this evening as he generally gets by this forum on a daily basis.

cool
I am glad the stock 8.2 will do.
(I wish the stock frames would hold up as well.
I am not looking forward to welding my frames together.)
I will check with seller of unit to make sure not old generation Eaton.
thanks for the advise.

I wish I could sell the Eaton for that price. I just don't do enough volume to get that price. Anyway, you will also want differential bearings and a super shim set to set the backlash and bearing prelaod. The super shim set is an adjustable shim set that works better than any of the others that I have used in the past 22 years.

the possi should hold up...the next thing to go will be tha axles...then maybe the r&p or dline.

We installed mine with the original 3.08 gearset. Had new carrier bearings pressed on, then set the backlash using a dial indicator. I think we set it at about .010 - my brother helped and I don't remember for sure. If the carrier slides right on in it's not tight enough - we had to drive it in with a dead blow mallet. Anyway - no problems. Wound up having a 3.73 set up by a pro though!

I put an Eaton posi in my 8.2 in my 67 two years ago.I got it from GEARSAREUS also $309.00 buy it now.I kept the stock 3.08 gears I just measured the backlash and set it back to what it was.I dont think it is a good idea to change the setting on a used gear set.

thanks for all the info guys.
You all have been a great help.
I'm going for it
I think I'll wait for the snow to fly
in case it gets too deep and ends up
leaving me on jacks too long.
thanks again.
