Does anyone know why some GM bellhousings (403) have the pivot ball mounted to the bellhousing? I thought the Camaro has it on the engine block. Don't Camaros use the 403?

thx, mike

The pivot on the bellhousing is for the fork. The other 2 (on the block and frame) are for the clutch cross shaft. "403" bellhousing is correct for ALL non-SS Camaros

this bellhousing has the pivot ball for the fork, but also has a pivot ball on the outside of the houseing for the clutch arm. Its a 403 and i thought all small block camaros used the 403...??

LOTS of different vehicles used the "403" including Camaros. SOME vehicles used the threaded boss on the side for a clutch bellcrank pivot point BUT, the Camaro was not one of them. The Camaro used a threaded boss on the side of the engine block for a bellcrank pivot location. Some engine blocks have 1 boss while other blocks have 2 bosses. Different chassis use different bosses to mount the bellcrank. Hope this helps.

mark,
does this mean that only one 403 bellhousting was made by GM and that the boss on the bell was left unused if put in a camaro? I am just trying to figure out if my bellhousing will be Factory "correct" with a boss in it

The "403" bellhousings are all pretty much alike and correct. Some castings have slightly different font but they are all alike. Nothing special about them realy. The boss was unused on Camaro applications.

thanks mark. So the 403 is correct for a '69 SS?
Another words, ALL small block camaros used the 403?

No, the 69 SS big block or SS small block uses a totaly different setup designed for the bigger SS 11" clutch. Nothing will "correctly" interchange between the two except maybe the bolts, clutch throwout bearing and fork.

Functional but not "correct". smile.gif

would you happen to know which Bellhousing part number is required for 350 SS?

Of course I do... :D

"621" bellhousing with the 14" 168 tooth flywheel, 11" clutch and pressure plate, staggered mounting hole starter, and matching starter brace. Those are unique to the SS.
