View Full Version : Rear Diff filler bolt
Domano 68 Apr 7th, 04, 05:44 PM I've managed to sqeak under my 68 and pry my head between the muffler and rear diff cover and cannot locate the filler bolt or level check bolt. I am assuming I just cant get a good angle on it due to the muffler. Thanks.
HwyStarJoe Apr 7th, 04, 06:10 PM It's on the passenger side of the diff, right above the center web. It'll be a flat plug, not a bolt head, and should need a 3/8" ratchet (no socket) to remove.
bowtie-70 Apr 8th, 04, 07:44 AM A 12 point 17MM socket will fit over the square head.

Domano 68 Apr 8th, 04, 09:38 AM Plan on draining and refilling. Any suggestions on oil brand and weight? How much does it hold, also? Thanks!
Domano 68 Apr 8th, 04, 02:32 PM Still not seeing it. Keep in mind there is oil and grease everywhere back there and the muffler is right up against it. Hard to get the ol fat head in there for a looksee. Is it on the cover, or the top of the housing? Any of you 327/Powerglide/10 bolters care to post a pic? Thanks!
big gear head Apr 8th, 04, 02:48 PM There is no drain plug. The only way to drain the oil is to remove the cover and let it run out. The fill plug is on the right side of the center casting between the yoke and the right axle tube, about half way between the top and bottom. You will probably have to scrape away grease and dirt to find it. Usually about 2 quarts will fill it. I use Amsoil synthetic oil.
Domano 68 Apr 8th, 04, 04:30 PM Thanks BGH for the location. Found it!
Local parts store didn't have any Amsoil, so I picked up some Valvoline Durablend Synthetic 80W 90. Any opinions on this brand?
big gear head Apr 9th, 04, 06:26 AM It should work fine. If you have a posi then you need to put in a bottle of the GM oil additive #1052358.
Vintage 68 Apr 9th, 04, 06:45 AM "SHOP TOWELS" - "SHOP TOWELS" - "SHOP TOWELS" - don't forget to get shop towels, this can get real messy
Like BGH said - 'open the rear cover by removing the bolts' - loosen the lower half bolts first (with a pan under to catch the drippin's) and then work your way to the top - should be a liitle less messy.
30 year old gear grease has a wonderfull smell that will be with you for weeks...
ps: you may also want to buy that little 'handy-dandy' pump thingy that Valvoline sells for pumping the new grease in - they are worth the couple of dollars.
Domano 68 Apr 9th, 04, 08:01 AM Thanks for the info! I am pretty sure I don't have posi, but not 100%. Had the car only for a few months. Stock, original 327 210HP, Powerglide, 10bolt.
