View Full Version : Muncie jumping out of gear
larry67 Mar 2nd, 05, 02:45 PM Pardon me if this has been covered previously. My 67 has a 396, Muncie M20, and 12 bolt rear axle. This is a new car to me and I have no experience with Camaros. A couple of problems that I've noted right off with the drivetrain - the transmission will occasionally but not always jump out of second gear. Is this more likely a problem inside the transmission or with the linkage? Is there a service manual available that I can buy that covers general problems like adjusting the linkage? Also there is a slight seepage of gear oil from the front of the differential where the driveshaft goes into the rear axle. Could this be from overfilling or do I need to replace the seal? Thanks for any help and sorry for asking simple questions.
Larry
I'd start by double checking the linkage adjustment. You did'nt mention what type of ****er you have(original or Hurst). Try to do a search on shift likage adjustment. As for the rear end, it sounds like a problem with the seal. Its a pretty simple procedure to replace, with the proper tools.

you need a 3/8 rod bent like an allen wrench.
with shifter in neutral push rod into shifter linkage where the 3/8s holes are.
if it wont go then that linkage needs to be loosened or tightend until the rod is all the way through the linkage.
then its set up right.
thorpe67RS Mar 2nd, 05, 03:59 PM FYI...if you are interested in a service manual that pretty much covers everything pick up a copy of the chiltons manual for 67-??, actually not sure what year it goes up to, but will help with a lot of the questions in regards to sevicing and also much more in depth info.
Zman1 Mar 2nd, 05, 08:17 PM Does this happen when accelerating, de-celerating, or both?
Could be worn engagement teeth on second gear.
Everett#2390 Mar 3rd, 05, 01:29 AM Typical Muncie symptom telling the operator it needs new synchronizing assemblies, or overhaul of the trans.
libb58 Mar 3rd, 05, 03:54 AM I think Everett hit the nail on the head, synchronizers. The tranny is probaly worn and should be dropped and freshened up.

Larry's 69 Mar 3rd, 05, 04:36 AM I had this same thing happen to me on a Chevelle I used to own. It popped out when I was decelerating and ended up being the synchronizer. That's what I believe you'll find.
Green Hornet Mar 3rd, 05, 08:01 AM I think Everett's right too, mine did that. It was third gear and a 1000 bucks later it's back in the car again.
ORENCH Mar 3rd, 05, 01:47 PM Possibly an inside problem, but as mentioned earlier, check the rod adjustments. Specially the shifter stops, one might be impeding full 2nd gear engagement.
JimM Mar 3rd, 05, 02:09 PM Absolutely, be sure about the shifter adjustment first. Make sure neutral is neutral, and the stops are adjusted so it's going all the way into gear. If you put it in second, and then pop the rod off the trans, nothing should move, it should be all the way there.
Under what conditions is it poping out of gear, exactly? Makes a difference...
Mine used to pop out of first... did it at 3500 rpm, no matter what. hard accelleration or just barely into it, even easing in genty, poped violently, too. Turned out to be... why can't I remember the name of this thing... the peice under the slider, that the sliders are splined to and slide on...anyway, it was worn out.
Doubt it's the synchro's, they help you get it in gear, but have nothing to do with keeping it there.
larry67 Mar 3rd, 05, 11:19 PM Thanks for all the good advice. I will check the linkage adjustment first. It is an Muncie shifter, not hurst. I have noticed that the shift lever hits the edge of the console when going into 2nd and 4th, there's lots of room at 1st and 3rd but it seems to be running out of space in 2nd and 4th. It is possible the console itself is part of the problem?

larry67 Mar 3rd, 05, 11:34 PM After doing a search I found this:
The stock shifter setup has a "tilt" adjustment. The shifter mounting bracket has a slot for the lower hole which allows the assy to pivot on the large main bolt. You will need to adjust all the rods after the tilt adjustment if you want to tilt the shifter assembly forward.
bonecrusher67conv Mar 4th, 05, 07:50 AM Buy the Muncie video from 5speeds.com. For $25 you can't go wrong. I've rebuilt two M20s and I take the TV and VCR out to the shop and play the tape while I did it.

JimM Mar 4th, 05, 08:52 AM If the shifter is hitting the console, that could be preventing it from getting all the way into gear, which very well could cause your problem.
Everett#2390 Mar 4th, 05, 09:16 AM Might also need a bushing replacement kit added to take up the slack.
