I have a 68 powerglide I want to find out the ratio. The tranny is apart how can I tell the ratio. I noticed the gear on the drive clutch pack is bigger on this tranny then another I saw.

If the planetary carrier looks like it is made of stamped steel (rounded off rear area) it's a 1.82. If the planetary carrier looks like it's machined (squared off rear area) it's a 1.76. The input shafts are different lengths also. I don't remember which is which, but someone will chime in with that soon.

edit: from a Steve Oldani reply.....

....If it measures 12 7/8" tip-to-tip it is a 1.76, or if 12 5/8" it is a 1.82.

Also from the color of the input shaft, at least with my experience. The 1.82 (6-cylinder) had a bluish color or dark. The 1.76 (8-cylinder) has a silver color due to it being fully machined.

V8 model, 1.76, has one more clutch & steel plate, shorter length piston.

The 1.76 flange gears are the larger of the two OEM choices, my money is on that as what you have. If you need any help with going through it, just email me.

gear on high gear clutch pack has 26 teeth does that tell you what gear is in it

It is a 1.76 as mentioned, since the 1.82 has 23 teeth on the flange gear. One thing to remember when you put it back together...the Torrington bearing that sits between that flange gear and the center gear in the planetary is easily forgotten by a lot of guys when they freshen the trans, since it will fall out of there when you take it apart. This is not a pretty sight if it occurs and it will eat up the gears. The Torrington in the 1.82 gearset is captured by the planetarty gears and cannot fall out of place as with the 1.76 Torrington.
