I had the front end of my car up on jack stands for detailing and working the headlight covers etc. when I finally had occasion to look back under the car, there was my red auto tranny fluid running all over the place. Im guessing at least 1/2 quart and took a ton of kitty litter to clean it up. Why and what would leak with the front end up? Guessing the front crossover was 16" off the garage floor.
Any idea on this one? ;)

Tailshaft seal bad. With the car level very little fluid back there.Check seal and bushing if thats where the leak is.

also if the car wasnt running for awhile check the dip stick tube seal.
90% of the time people say the pan is leaking but it turns out to be the seal on the dip stick tube.
( converter fluid leaks back into the pan over time causing the level to go past the tubes seal.
If seal is bad youll leak a 1/2 quart easy)

You akso might check the vent hole in the sliding yoke, U-joint side. If its leaking there, from the little hole, the O-ring inside the yoke is shot.
I found a couple to leak from here and never found the O-ring, or place to put it if I did have one. I fixed the leak by removing the driveshaft and placed it standing up on the slip yoke end. Then cleaned the center area of the slip yoke of rust using a small wire brush. Then cleaned the area well with lacquer thinner. Then, I mixed up a batch of JB Weld and filled the void. Let it set overnight to cure and leak went away.
Info given by both dawg and 67 Plum is correct. Oil level in torque convertor will always seek its lowest level. It slowly leaks through the oil pump into the pan and fills up. This is a constant, especially with gravity.

Was the drive-shaft installed? That is a lot of fluid. It's not uncommon for them to drip if they set for a long time without being heated up. The gaskets and seals will get dry and shrink with age. Usually a few hot drives and the leaks are gone for a while. With that much fluid, you should be able to find the source I would think.

Fill it back up, put a pan under it and jack the front end back up. You'll see the leak easily!
