View Full Version : Is my diff toasted?

I was getting ready to swap out an axle that has a bent flange on my 68 Camaro(10 bolt non-posi). The whole time I was checking the driver's side rear axle flange the driveshaft would turn with the axle. I pulled the passenger side brake rotor and caliper off so I could check that side just in case both axle flanges were bent. I was running the car in reverse on the jackstands with no rotors or wheels on the car to watch the flanges to see if they were wobbling. Since I had no brakes hooked up I had to shut the car off in reverse. I put the trans in park and the driveshaft is locked, but both axles now turn freely. Is this normal for the non-posi or is my differential history at this point? Shouldn't one of the axles be locked in with the drive gears. If it's broke, then I guess it's posi time.

Actually no, not broken. With the drive shaft locked, while manually turning one axle, the other axle will turn in the opposite direction.

If both the driveshaft and one axle is locked, then won't be able to turn the other axle.

OK, I get it now. The axles are turning opposite direction so it's like being in park. I guess when the one wheel was locked in place with the brakes grabbing the rotor it made the other wheel turn along with the driveshaft.
