Hello, Rebuilt my M20 trans with a OEM hurst shifter this week. Road tested today and it up shifts and down shifts perfect. My problem is it goes into reverse to easy, like the reverse lock out is not working. When stoped its hard to tell if your in first or reverse. Imagine droping the clutch at 4 gran in reverse. Could be embarassing and expensive thanks Dave

There is no reverse lock out on a Muncie, Sagnaw or BorgWarner T-10 variant......unless you are using a shifter that has one built onto it, but you have stated that you are using an OEM Hurst....which doesnt have one.

If it goes into reverse too easy, be thankful, you did a great job rebuilding it !!

Dave, I guess you found some new bushings graemlins/thumbsup.gif

On the reverse problem, put the old bushings back in :D That would let you know when you in reverse.
I always thought that the reverse gear had a little "sticky" spot that you had to get past. Maybe you rebuilt the shifter too well.

Anywho, What rear gear do you have? Kevin

I may be all wet on this one but here it is. The detent in the shifter is a little "T" shaped stamped metal do-dad that snaps over the head of the shifter button when you send it into the reverse shifter gate. You can insert it upside down if it has a lot of wear and it might give you more "snap" but you will need to tear the shifter apart again to get to it. I ripped my shifter apart about a year ago and cleaned and reassembled it. Works great now. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback....maybe I just need to get use to the new feel. Before rebuilding it took two hands and one foot to get the car in reverse.

Mark I have no problem pulling the shifter again. I don't quite understand which part neeeds to be installed reversed. Do you have a pic or a part name. I was looking at the shifters on the mr. gasket page.

Kevin I am happy running 373 gears in our area. I can cruise at 65/70 mph with no problem. I can check again but I believe I tach about 3000/3500.
Let me know if you want to take a drive to get the feel of the gears. I assume your thinking about your projects

Thanks again for the help all Dave

The little detent piece is inside the shifter mechanisim and has a spring to keep it tight against the button which is about the size of a half dollar. The button will "click" past the detent on the way to the reverse gate. The detent is flat rectangular profile stamping about 3/32 thick x 3/8 wide x 1-1/2" long with a head on one end. You can see the end sticking out of the shifter assembly on the inside mounting surface if memory serves me correctly. This is a difficult assembly to describe. Hope this helps in some way.

Thanks Stinger I think your right. What I was calling a reverse lock out is the click you feel while pushing the shifter to the left. The click is so slight you can hardly feel it. I will pull the shifter and disassemble and I believe i'll see what you are referring to. Thanks again for the help

Dave, Glad you found your problem. I was planning to run 3.55s or 3.31s with my M20. I was worried about the high revs for a 350/300. I was just wondering. 3500rpm for 70mph, that sounds like you have the 15in wheels. I will be running 14s, so I think 3.73 will be too much.

When I get my convert on the road with my temporary SS350/300 engine, powerglide and 3.55 posi, I will be glad to exchange some drives :D with you and you can feel a 69 with the top down graemlins/thumbsup.gif

See ya at the outlets! Kevin
