I just installed my (brass) pilot bushing into my 502 and noticed that I chipped it around the outside. Is this a problem? Should I start over even if the inside surface is not damaged? Please help me out.

I would think that as long as the press fit is tight and the chip area is not a contact point it should be OK. But myself, being a nitnoid (my wife has another name for me ;) ), I'd pull it and replace it. Not a lot of $'s involved here for peace of mind.

How about using the roller style?

Use synthetic grease.

Bushings are cheap and its a pain to pull the trans to change it why take the chance?

I will never use a roller again and would recommend against them to anyone considering one. Both I have used on two different cars were installed carfully with a tool to press them in and both have failed in less than 5000 miles. Also the steel remains are tricky to remove. I would admit maybe I've had bad luck but the bronze bushings never have caused any problem.
