Hi guys.

I´m about to start putting together a "new" rear end for my car. It´s a 8.5 10-bolt with a (for now) standard posi.

Now I have three Q:s...

1. Axletubes are to be welded to the center section. Do I need to have them fixture welded? or can I just do it myself?

2. I´m thinking of a Detroit Locker.. are there any disadvantages to this besides the banging and clonking noices?

3. Would the Locker be any stronger than an Eaton posi, or Would that be a better choise since its quiet?

Thanks
Daniel

The axle tubes don't need to be welded in a fixture, but they do need to be welded differently than welding mild steel. The center is made of nodular iron and requires nickel rods. Here is some pretty good information on how to weld them.

As for the Detroit Locker, it will work better if you plan on doing some serious drag racing. It will work a lot better when doing burnouts and shopuld give more consistant 60 foot times. Are you going with 30 spline axles?

Thanks BGH.
That thread was very informative.

If I can get a hold of the right nickel wire and a flask of argon gas for my big a** mig, I think I will try mig-welding it.
All of the other things needed for the operation, I got covered.

The car will be for street/strip use, but not a daily driver. The reason I was thinking of a Locker is that I´ve got thoughts of a 700hp blown smallblock tickeling my mind.

Axles used will bee determind after Posi/locker have been decided on, but I´m sure they will be 30 spline.

Thanks again
Daniel
