View Full Version : 67 Bellcrank (z-bar) mount
Calpantera Feb 28th, 05, 07:59 PM I am installing a clutch linkage kit and the bellcrank mount bolt holes do not line up with the holes in my frame. The factory assembly manual shows two different brackets http://thehoovers.com/liam/camaro/assbly_manual_zbarbracket1.jpg and then a revised one here http://thehoovers.com/liam/camaro/assbly_manual_zbarbracket2.jpg Now my mount holes in my frame look like they could be the revised version http://thehoovers.com/liam/camaro/bracket6.jpg
The bracket from Classic Industries is the only one shown in their catalog http://thehoovers.com/liam/camaro/bracket2.jpg but it does not line up with the holes in my frame. http://thehoovers.com/liam/camaro/bracket4.jpg and it does NOT look like either of the ones from the manual. Has any one ran into this before? Should I just mount the bracket with the two lower holes that do line up?
Thanks guys
Bill
pdq67 Mar 1st, 05, 01:19 AM I'd send it back to them and tell them what's going on and either get the correct one or my money back!!

PS., and there's only 3 motors that fit our cars, 6-banger, SB and BB... SB and BB are the same except fo the Z-bar being longer for the BB.
I don't know if the 6-banger car's Z-bar S/F mount is bolted on different or not??
Just thought of this.... Seems this has popped up in the past, might do a search to see if you can turn up the tread on it??

Everett#2390 Mar 1st, 05, 02:30 AM All engines had the same attachment point in reference to the subframe.
Your manual picture shows the setup going onto an L6 engine, see page two.
The bracket they sent you is for a right-hand drive car. Check the the third pic of the new bracket with Page 2 of the manual. The new bracket is a mirror image of the OE design.
If you drive around with a mirror, it'll always work........
Kyvox Mar 1st, 05, 03:41 AM Flip the bracket over and try it. The AIM drawing shows the bent offset going towards the engine, I think it might really go towards the outside of the car. This should also align it properly with the pivot ball on the engine.
Calpantera Mar 1st, 05, 04:36 AM I tried flipping it around but it hits the inner fender well, also it looks like its too far forward like that. I called Classic Industries and they said look in the catalog and see if its the same, I did and it is. They said they test fit parts when they come in on Camaros they have there and this would have been test fitted. They also do not have any record of anyone else complaining about this issue. Does anyone have a 67 4 speed that can take a look and see if the z-bar bracket looks like mine?
Thanks Guys
pdq67 Mar 1st, 05, 08:29 AM I will look tonight for you if I can even get my head down in there to tell?????
It seems like I have to almost stand on my head to attach a Z-bar everytime I do it.. He, He!!

67ssrs350 Mar 1st, 05, 02:27 PM I just looked at mine. Looks like Everett has it right about being for a right handed driver. Sonny
stephen kotula Mar 1st, 05, 03:04 PM Just for everyones info original 67 Z bar bracket is different than 68-69, that is why your having trouble. The 68-69 style is still availiable from GM for 14.55 list price. Any 3 speed or 4 speed 67 Camaro or Firebird would have the correct one. Sincerely Steve
Calpantera Mar 1st, 05, 03:46 PM Classic sells that one as a 67. So they are wrong I guess. Anyone know where to get the right one for a 67?
stephen kotula Mar 1st, 05, 04:48 PM Bill, if you need a pic of one email me and I'll send you a pic. You could try Bob Harris Camaro Specialties in NY or any dealers who advertise used parts in Hemmings motor news. Sincerely Steve
pdq67 Mar 1st, 05, 05:13 PM Sorry, I forgot to look and just got out of the tub. Tomorrow for sure!

Calpantera Mar 2nd, 05, 08:17 AM This part is not easy to find smile.gif Classic insists that its the right part but obviously from the images I got of the right one (Thanks Steve!) its not.
StevesCamaroParts did not have one but they directed me to a guy in South San Francisco named Mike (Forgot the name of his shop) and he thinks he has one. He says he has 15 years worth of Camaro parts all over his shop and his house and he will look through some boxes for me. He seemed like he knew a lot about Camaros and is one of those "go to guys" I don't want to post his phone number but if anyone wants it send me an email. I will let you guys know if he comes thru on the part.

pdq67 Mar 2nd, 05, 02:14 PM I just looked and couldn't really see it all that good, but mine appears to look like the second pic.
Mine's like the one from D&R Classic, (on page 316 of their e-cat., standard trans-clutch stuff), PN Z20014, for $10.
They say it fits all three years...
Mine is definately not "L-shaped" like the bracket you have to me??? It's "humped" at the "L" indent???
BUT, (if you can visualize it), kinda like the top half of a fish with a tall rounded/humped back AND only with half a tail that sticks up the same way??? (The fish's mouth is on top of it's nose pointing up and is the bolt slot!!)....
I know, I know, poetic license here if you will sorta crap b/c I don't know how else to describe it???????
Hope this is of help.

Calpantera Mar 2nd, 05, 04:55 PM You mean this one?
http://www.drclassic.com/catalog/Camaro/Transmission/Z20014.html
Its the wrong one. Here is a pic Steve sent me that shows both side by side. The 67 one is on the left.

Bill
pdq67 Mar 3rd, 05, 01:18 AM Yes, the one on the left! I couldn't see the bottom of mine so just assumed the one I listed/described was it b/c it wasn't like the first pic. that is "L" shaped is all!
Sorry for any confusion on my part.
Thanks for posting the two side-by-side!
pdq67
Calpantera Mar 3rd, 05, 04:19 AM To see the bottom you just look in the wheel well, all three bolts are accessable from behind the drivers side front tire. Assuming you don't have the wheelwell stuffed with meat!

pdq67 Mar 3rd, 05, 02:18 PM Yes, my tires and rims are finally on my car AND you are right!!
pdq67
JimM Mar 3rd, 05, 03:16 PM ok, eyeballed mine (68)
http://thehoovers.com/liam/camaro/bellcrank_mounts.jpg
It is the one on the right, BUT, there are FOUR holes in the subframe, and EITHER bracket appears that it would bolt on correctly and fit. My bracket uses the 2 bottom holes, and the rearmost one of the top pair. The left one in the pic would go right on using the frontmost top hole, and put the shaft in the same place.
Thinking back, when I originally put mine on, that top rear hole was HIDDEN behind the inner fender, and I had a heck of a time figuring out it was there, because I could SEE 3 holes, but they didn't fit!! Once I found the missing hole, I had to "adjust" the inner fender a bit to use it.
pdq67 Mar 3rd, 05, 06:19 PM All I know is that I made the mistake of removing that part when I installed the old .060" over, 11.5 to 1 CR., 409 "W" motor years ago in my car AND I had one """""HELL"""""" of a time bolting it back on along with the SB Z-bar!!!!!!!!!!!
And I installed the big "W" motor using 100 percent stock 350 SB stuff too!! M-20 4-speed and all!!!!
It looked like it grew in there from the faxctory EXCEPT for the big "W" chrome valve covers!!
A couple of my Buddies "eye-balled" it after I finished the install and absolutely LOVED the chrome "W" valve covers!!!
And I have to say it ran like a SB!!!

Calpantera Mar 3rd, 05, 06:37 PM I WISH there was 4 holes. Thats the first thing I did when I saw that it was different. I even conteplated drilling and tapping a 4th hole but I would have to remove the inner fender to do it. If all else fails I will just make a bracket using the one I got from Classic. Now if I only knew how to weld smile.gif ( I know, I know. You aint a man if you can't fashion steel )
sick67 Mar 4th, 05, 07:50 AM Thats why mine didn't line up ? I never really gave it any thought so I unbolted the inner fender pushed it back and tapped some holes.
crashent Mar 4th, 05, 10:19 AM Does anybody know if there is a difference between 1967 and 1968 clutch pedals??? I know what a 1969 looks like... I was looking thru all my pedal sets to see if I had the 1967 Z-bar bracket, and I came across 2 complete sets hanging from the swing bracket, but one clutch pedal is straight and the other makes a slight offset...Thanks in advance...Crash
Calpantera Mar 4th, 05, 10:38 AM Well the set I just installed had a straight clutch pedal. But I am worried about the hole for the brake actuating rod pin. It looks like its lower on the pedal arm than the old single pedal was. It looks to be slightly lower on the arm than where the switch is. I did not really compare the two before I installed it. Does anyone know if the holes are at different heights on diffent years? Heck for all I know this assembly didn't even come from a Camaro but it did bolt right in.
pdq67 Mar 4th, 05, 03:17 PM A non-power brake pedal will have the hole higher then a power brake pedal b/c the M/C mounts using the top two studs and Power-Booster mounts using the lower two studs.
pdq67
Calpantera Mar 5th, 05, 04:26 AM Its that the only difference? Can I just drill a hole in the power brake pedal in the proper place for a manual M/C? Is the pin, hole and forked rod end the same size?
Thanks!
Bill
pdq67 Mar 5th, 05, 03:06 PM Should be but you will need a longer pushrod, (and maybe a long threaded coupling nut too??), b/c a manual M/C uses a longer pushrod and is two piece for pedal/M/C piston adjustment!
The longer pushrod is b/c a manual M/C has a deep recess in the piston of about 1.25" to keep the pushrod from falling out IF the piston ever stuck in!!
I think I bought a 5/16" x 4.0" long, UNF, Grade-8 bolt and cut longer threads on it to make my "threaded half-one"?
Like a dummy, I put my stock "threaded half-one" up and then couldn't find it so had to make another!! Then found it 6-months later!!
What a drag getting old and forgetful!!!
pdq67
Calpantera Mar 7th, 05, 06:52 AM Ya I have the longer adjustable pushrod as it already has manual brakes. But one arm of the fork on the end is broken and it had a bolt and nut to hold it onto the pedal.
