I was given a 3 speed trans that came from a nova. I dont know if it was the original one or not but it used to be a 3 on the tree but now is a floor shift. I found this code "S1216" in the spot where i was told to look. What does this mean and is this transmission a "good" one or should i invest in something better?
Thanks

What year Nova? Are there 4 bolts holding the side cover on?

It was a 65 nova (chevy II). Yes, there are 4 bolts holding the side cover on.

Early non syncro first gear. Very poor design will break with a 6 cyl. In a Nova to change to something else you must change to a bellhousing that had a Saginaw 3 or 4spd or a Muncie behind it.

Thanks for replying. What does the syncro mean? Are you saying that if i wanting to put a manual in, i should look for a better one that this 3 speed?

You can't downshift into first without having the car stopped ( like going into reverse)
