How much noise is a Muncie wide ratio going to make while idling, in gear or out. The reason I ask is, my brother just installed one in his '66 Chevy II wagon. He doesn't have in the interior yet, nothing, top to bottom. He says you can here it pretty good in the car, but not bad outside the car. I told him it would be amplified inside the car and would be much quieter once he had in all the interior stuff.
He just rebuilt the trans with all new bearings and I saw the gears, looked good.
I told him I would ask, so what do you think?
Thanks, Guy

all manual trannies make a fair amount of noise- even the newer ones that are supposedly quiet. that's what happens when you've got gears meshing with other gear. unless it is an unbearable crunch, grunt, groan, or howl, i'd not worry about it. putting a shift boot on would probably take away most of the beautiful noise you hear inside the car.

I rebuilt mine last winter. It whined to beat the band for a hundred miles or so, quiet as a church since then.

Muncies are pretty loud transmissions and they do may a fair amount of noise when in neutral, especially when the boot, the carpet, and the console is missing. One thing that I have found though is that if the shifter isn't adjusted correctly, a Muncie will make more noise than normal. So, I would recommend that you check and adjust your shifter. Also make sure that the shift arms and the bushings don't have any play in them. It you have play, it will make it almost impossible to correctly adjust your shifter.
