Need help to settle a debate between my co-workers. I have a 67 camaro with console. Which manual trans can you put behind a high performance gas pump 500+cid (502,509,540)BBC and expect it to hold up under hard use street/strip.

Heres the catch: Must be able to work with console.Must use single stick type shifter(no seperate reverse lever)And must be able to use on the street(no clutchless trans that pop out of gear on decel)

Majority I spoke with said that a Muncie would not last too long..... If so I assume aftermarket is the way to go.

I dont have this problem cause I have a mild small block smile.gif Thanks in advance, Ray

However, if you're willing to treat the trans with some assemblence of gentleness, the TREMEC TKO has been installed behind lots of BBC, and even raced with slicks. I have one in my BBC Chevelle, and I know the NMCA Mustang racers are using a TKO II and running 9.30s in the 1/4 mile. It's very durable and will take a lot of abuse, but it's not indestructible. With a 525 ft/lb rating, it's the strongest street transmission you can buy, especially for only $1795 brand new.
The new '03 Viper T56 is rated at 550 ft/lbs, but it's not available yet. D&D claims to have reworked a 450ft/lb Viper T56 to 550 ft/lb although TTC doesn't recognize nor support it.

The GM TKO will bolt right up to your bellhousing, use your stock clutch setup (26 spline clutch though), will fit in the tunnel, can use the original console, has internal shift rails (toploader style), we have a custom crossmember to make installation simple, uses your speedo cable, uses any flat Hurst shifter bar, back up lights are activated by a simple switch on the trans, etc. You'd need to shorten your driveshaft and install the C6 slip yoke onto it. The 1st Camaros are probably the easiest to swap in the TREMEC 5sp.

Mike

Thanks for the info Mike! How would this tremec tko compare in strength to the autogear m22? Is the tremec a factory or aftermarket trans? Do any other factory production cars use tremecs?

The 5th gear o.d. sounds great!

Thanks, Ray

Thanks, Ray I'm not sure, what's their M22 supposed to be rated at? The TKO 5sp is rated at 525 ft/lbs, and we have lots of cars with more tq than that. The original M22 was rated around 350 ft/lbs, and obviously it's lived behind much stronger engines.

It's made by TTC, and is used in a few production (specialty) cars. TTC makes transmissions for all the North American RWD sports cars (Viper, Camaro, Vette, Cobra, etc).

And yes, an OD is just awesome. You get 4 'normal' driving gears with 4th being 1:1, plus a 0.68 OD.

Mike I was just viewing the website and it looks really good! They have everything worked out including shifter location with console, reverse light switch etc..I might be interested in one for my small block 67. Just several things I am concerned about:

#1) the rpm drop from 1st to 2nd will be drastic(3.27 first to 1.98 second gear) Its a 1.29pt drop.Equal to the drop of an M21 from first (2.20) to fourth (1.00). Do they have a closer 1st to 2nd ratio?

#2)Website only accepts credit cards via paypal. Can I call in my credit card number directly? (I believe by using paypal you waive certain protection rights from card provider)Is there a physical address for www.5speedtransmissions.com? (http://www.5speedtransmissions.com?)

Thanks, Ray
