Iam having a 502 CI motor put in my 69 camaro, the hp is a little over 600, I thought a detroit locker rear end would be the way to go, heres what the guy whos doing my car says

If
you
wish to drive the car on the street, then I would try to shy away from
the
locker rear end idea. There is too much chatter around the corners &
the
vehicle may even brake an axle or two in tight cornering. A well built
12
bolt limited slip rear end will easily handle any work load you give
it.

I want a streetable car to take out on weekends and cruise nights, and input you can give will be helpful, Iam leaning towards 3.73 gears.

The things he says are true. The "too much chatter" part is an opinion, but perhaps a valid one for many.

He`s right, a detroit locker is a bit much for the street, but can be used on the street though. If you are in the market for a limited slip unit, then I would definately look into the detroit trutrac. It uses no spider gears or traditional clutches or springs. It has planetary gears that slide on a main gear. It doesn`t even require limited slip fluid. It`s smooth, quiet, strong and locks better than a clutch type limited slip. I`m, however, not sure if it is made for the car 12 bolt though.

An Eaton Posi might be your best bet.

I had one in my last car. It will make some noise sometimes on tight turning, but not a real big issue in my opinion. Never heard of them breaking axles on the street, but I suppose it's possible. With the 35 spline axles I had it was that or a spool, so I didn't have a lot of options.

I'm currently running a Auburn posi in my 9" with 3.90 gears. I'm also an looking for something better for the street/strip. Especially the strip. I was looking into a Detroit Locker with 4.11 gears, but I haven't made up my mind yet on the Detroit Locker. My Auburn is great for the street, but it doesn't like the water burnouts. Sometimes only one tire spins good and gets hot. The other just sits there. It really screws up the launch and E.T. when the cold slick goes up in smoke. It's a difference of running a 14 second verses a 11 second 1/4.

Bud,
I will have to agree with your builder. As long as you dont put slicks on it and take it to the track for some pro type launches, I doubt that it will ever hook up good enough on the street to hurt a properly set up 12 bolt. Good axles would be the only change I would make. One of my customers runs a 12 bolt in his Super Gas Camaro and has no problems running 9.20's with it.

A Detroit Locker will not cause axles to break. Hooking up on weak stock axles or wheel hop causes axles to break. I have a Detroit Locker in my Camaro and it works well on the street. It does make some noise, but so do the Flowmasters! If you want something smooth then the Truetrac or Eaton posi would be best. There is one problem with using the Detroit Locker in the 12 bolt, TrakTec doesn't make one for the car 12 bolt. You can use the truck 12 bolt locker, but it takes some special shimming to make it work.
