Sounds like the shifter is not properly adjusted. Did you use the adjustment pin and get and real clean neutral gate ?

Mine used to stick also. My adjustment was fine but the bushings on the rods on the side of the trans were worn out.

My kids always have the same problem with the 68,
I watch them shift gears and they try to push the shifter over into the 3-4 gate, I'm always telling them not to do this let the shifter do its job, just push forward out of second gear and the shifter slips into the 3-4 gate all on its own,
