I want to rebuild the limited slip carrier on my '79 Camaro. I got the entire rear end out of a '78 Z-28 and have been driving it for a year. The clutches are pretty loose. The ring and pinion are o.k. I just need to replace the clutches. It is the clutch type and not the cone type. It looks like something I can tackle but I have one question. Is there a trick to getting that flat steel "s" spring out and more importantly, is there a trick to geting it back in. Also, where should I buy such a rebuild kit?

Getting the spring put is easy, just remove the cross shaft and pry the spring out with a screwdriver. Getting it back in is almost as easy. Use a pair of Channel Locks to squeeze the spring enough to get it started between the gears and lightly drive it in with a hammer. You can get the clutches through GM if you can find a parts man who knows the difference between the Traction Lock and a Eaton posi. You have the Traction Lock and Eaton clutches will not work in it. The clutches are about $90. Your biggest problem with this rebuild will probably come from the lack of shims for setting the clutch preload. GM used thick spacers to set the preload, but you will probably need thinner shims to get the preload set right. There are no shim sets available for this. I have found some shims that work, but you must buy them individually at about $3 each. The problem with this is that you will need a selection of them so you can swap them out untill you get the right ones.
