I have a rear end from a 96 Ford explorer & it measures the same from backing plate to backing plates as my 12 bolt in my 67 Camaro, Is the explorer rear end a 9" it has a posi & 373 gear ratio, it looks to be easy to modify to go under a Camaro. How strong is this rear end.

It's an 8.8. Fords version of a 12 bolt. They are a pretty good rearend and have a nice disk brake set up. They will break in a heavy vehicle but so will anything else. Should be fine in a Camaro.

It also has 31 spline axles. Measure the total width of it, don't rely on the backing plate measurement. The Camaro rear end is 60 inches wide. You also must check the pinion offset. The Camaro has a 1/2 inch pinion offset, which means the pinion center line is 1 inch closer to the right side than the left. The pinion offset must be right or the driveshaft will not fit in the tunnel. The axle bolt pattern is 5 on 4 1/2 instead of the Chevy 5 on 4 3/4, so your wheels won't bolt on.
