hi I have an 84 camaro... I cleaned off the rear axle and it shows a 6ET number in the front of the right side axle housing.... I found in my haynes manual that there was a 6EP and a 6EF... but no 6ET.... could someone please tell me what this means... what size rear it is and what gears....

Thanks!!!

6ET = 1984 Camaro 3.08:1, Non-Locking

First letter after this code will tell Assembly Plant.
Next 3 Numbers are Julian Date.
Last Letter D or N (or 1 or 2) will be Day or Night shift.

Hope this helps.

don't know much about rearends.... does non-locking mean limited slip, or open??? I think it's limited slip... it will FRY both of it's tires at will, but one takes a second to catch up with the other... I know it's not posi, but hoping l/s...

Thanks again!

Non-Locking means exactly that - it don't "lock"...
This would be a standard 'Open', 'Peg-leg' or 'Non-Posi'(no posi) rearend.
If it now has a locker (locking) or Positraction (posi) unit in it - it was added later.
Lift rear and turn one tire or remove the cover to be sure.

I have turned the tires before.. when I turn one forward, the other turns in reverse... I guess this means that no posi then huh... lol.... so, What would I have to do to get this into posi form with the same housing???? I was thinking maybe 4.10 gears... and a Spool??? maybe??? I don't really care about street driveability... it's only a weekend/drag car.... gas it WAY too expensive to run it every day... lol...

Uhhhmmmm - I'm not a big fan of spools for most applications.
We use them on the dirt cars - because we pick tire size to help turn the car in the corners,
but I never use them for other applications.
I am a big fan of lockers and most correctly set-up posi's.

Time to start a new post for sugestions and answers to the 'posi question'.
Try a new post with a 'shout-out' to "Big Gear Head" - He's a regular on here and can score you great parts at great prices.
You might also just want to look him up in the directory and send him e-mail with your questions.
Here is his info - http://www.camaros.net/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_profile;u=00001924
I'm sure he can give you price options - but, don't just go "cheap" or you will be doing this all over again soon. Buy the best parts (bearings) and posi you can afford, you'll be very glad you did.
I hate when that 'shot-gun blast' sound comes from the rear of the car :eek:

Hope this helps;

John
