: Thinking of going from 3.73 to 2.73 rear end... Need advise

Ok I just bought my first 69 Camaro and the guy before me was into drag racing. He dumped a Beck Racing Engine 383cu in engine with TCI TH350 tranny mated to a 3.73:1 Posi 10 bolt rear.
Engine outputs 465 Horsepower

Now lets just say that the acceleration at low speeds is just insane. Ok even half throttle will cause the huge new mickey thompson slicks (were on the car when I bought it) to start burning rubber and even getting wiggly to the point that I need to let off the gas a little to keep the rear end in check!

With all this said, I am thinking of going from 3.73 to 2.73. Currently my engine is at 3500rpms when going 75mph which is just insane. My math shows I should be pulling 2562 rpms at 75mph with the new rear end gear.

I am thinking because of the sheer power of this engine, there shouldn't be a need for a 3.73 gear in this car unless it was just for drag racing, correct? I want this car to be my weekend cruiser, not a drag racer, yet still toast any poor soul who thinks he can beat me.

Current stats are 465HP with a 12.6 second Quarter Mile

Damn, wrong side of the country, I would swap just so you could see the difference. Yes, 26"tall tires and 70 mph is about 2500ish rpm's. Some taller tires would help some, and how much you travel at 70mph is another factor.

I'd gladly give up 1-1.5 second on my quarter mile to get 900-1000rpms off my 75mph driving!

Well, if you really don't care about off the line accelleration, then go for the 2.73's.

I have a 10bolt posi and 2.73 gears in my 69.I'll trade ya' straight across....minus the brakes. With the 700R4 I have now the 2.73's make the engine lug on the freeway.I'm turning 1800 rpm's at 70 now.

Consider an overdrive automatic instead of a gear swap, such as a 700r4 or a 2004r. You'll get to keep the great accelleration and run low RPM's at freeway speeds. The best of both worlds. It is more expensive, however.

TOMS69, am I out of my mind wanting the 2.73? How many horses are you pushing from your 69? Is it a Posi unit?

BPOS, who else sells good 200-R4 transmissions?
TCI has a Streetfighter 200-R4 for $1338 at yearone.com
Can't find any pricing on an Art Carr 200R4 on the Internet.
Also will my B&M 3000 stall torque converter work with the 200-R4?
Anyone know where I should shop for the best price on this 200-R4 either built by TCI/Art Carr or rebuilt using one of their kits?

I bought mine from

www.700r4.com (http://www.700r4.com)

They do 200's and 700's. Their prices for 200's are the same for 700's at the various levels.

There is also a guy in Sacramento who is supposed to be very good...but I don't have a link...somebody else will post it I'm sure.

My 69 has a ZZ4 crate motor,so I've got 355 hp and 405 lb-ft torque.Yes,my 10 bolt is a "posi".

As for Bowtie Overdrives....I've used them. They were helpful and very nice people to deal with.I've personally been to their shop to purchase parts. If you go with a 700R4 trans reguardless of who the builder is, save yourself a headache and buy Bowtie Overdrives "TV made EZ kit" www.tvmadeez.com (http://www.tvmadeez.com) graemlins/thumbsup.gif
