I have a Muncie in my 69 (3925660), not sure which one.

The shifter is more toward the rear of the cut out than it is to the front. Side to side it is fine. I just installed the correct console boot and now the shifter does not easily engage in 2nd and 4th because the rubber is in the way. The Cut out in the tunnel is very clean, but I have no idea if this car is a factory manual trans car or even factory console.

Any thoughts on what I could do to get the shifter moved forward? Other than cutting the rear of the hole, I'm not sure what to do. The boot fits exactly now so if I was to cut the rear of the hole I would need to patch the front part of the cut out.

Are you sure you have the right shifter for your car? If not it will never fit properly. Also, you should have some adjustment front to back in the shifter itself where it mounts to the transmission, however you will have to re adjust the linkage if you adjust it. When I get home I will check the # of my shifter so you can check yours, or you can go the Hurst web site and look it up. You will find lots of good info on their site.

Ok, you need for a 69 Camaro , according to Hurst is 391-7438 for the shifter and 373-7437 installation kit.

Hope this helps!

Is the cutout for the shifter original ?? In other words are the corners rounded etc like it was cut at the factory ???

When I changed from a floor 3 speed to a muncie, I had to enlarge the hole towards the back of the car to get the shifter to fit. The shifter for the muncie sits farther back than the 3 speed

So the possibilities are... your car was originally a 3 speed.... you have the wrong shifter...... or you have the wrong tailshaft on your transmission............

No, I don't know if the cut-out is original or if it even has the correct shifter (I will have to check out my shifter).

I do know that:
1. The cut out is very clean w/rounded or angled corners and the shift boot I bought for the console car fit the size of the hole very good, the front and rear boot screw holes lined up, but I had to re-drill the side ones.

2. There is not a shift cable hole in the tunnel for an automatic.

3. The car has a floor shift steering column and no idication there was a shift indicator in the dash.

4. The car does have a clutch safety switch.

When I did install the new shift tunnel (the plastic piece between the top plate and the boot)it was about an inch to far to the rear where it should line up with the boot. Which could be fixed by moving the entire console foward by an inch.

I did notice in the assembly manual they show a different # for the shift tunnel between the 3 and 4spd. None of our repro parts suppliers list a different between the 3 and 4 spd tunnel though.

I have also been following the "Console" discussion under Tech 2003 http://www.camaros.net/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=000820 , which covers the problem about the shift tunnel.

I went from a 3-speed Sag on the floor to the Muncie with no tunnel issues.

Tire Smoke's got it. You can pivot the shifter front to rear. You will have to re-adjust the shifter like he said, so go to the Hurst website and find your shifter so you've got the instructions.

As an fyi, the shifter boot bracket that sits under the carpet needs to be screwed into place. At first I was too excited to drive it with the 4-speed installed and I blew it off. I did have shifter impact to the rear of the hole at first (still went into gear though). Then I installed it the right way an now no interference.

Good luck.

Did you have a console?

If so then you reused your 3spd shift tunnel/extension part #3949540, right?

I was trying to install a 4spd shift tunnel 3949539 which does not line up with the boot.

I need to track down the 3sp part, it doesn't seem to be available as a repro. item.

It's good to know that I can adjust the shifter to work, it actually goes int0 2 and 4 now but it doesn't feel fully engaged.

Thanks for the input
