I did the 500 and it was a direct bolt in. used the custom shifter and used my stock shifter location and stock boot for car with no console.

Bought mine from Jeff at Classic5speed. The install went without a hitch. If you have a console you may want to ask Jeff how well the shifter will line up. Mine is a non-console car so I just trimmed the opening a bit for the shifter.

I have a TKO 600 from classicchevy5speed, I used one of their crossmembers and supplied shifter. It does fit the console w/shiftplate w/o issues. I didn't buy a kit per say but I guess it amounts to the same thing. I will be sending some photos and a write-up to Jeff in the near future. SS

1968bbc, Nice to see another Ohioan. What are you replacing? I'm looking for something to replace my powerglide.

Take a look here to see what is involved with installing a TKO into a 68 67-69 Camaro TKO installation notes (http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/67_69_camaro_transmission_install_notes.htm). It is pretty straight forward as the other guys mentioned.
Also, take a look here for a picture of a a console with a stock Tremec shifter: Tremec buying tips and install pictures (http://www.classicchevy5speed.com/important_tips_Tremec_Purchase.htm).
I have many other install pics if you would like to see them. Feel free to give me a call with any questions.
Cris - let me know how you like the TKO
Shawn - looking forward to seeing your install write up.
