My '68 has a TH400 and 4:11 gears in the back. I can't really drive over 55 on the interstate. What is a better overdrive transmission to get, the 700R4 or the 200R4?
I hear from a reliable transmission builder that a 700R4 can't be built to handle more then 500 horse. I found a 200R4 that can handle 800 horse.
The motor currently has a little over 400 horse and will see some occasional drag racing. I also plan on putting in a big block next year that will have over 600 horse.

I don't know what trans would be the best for your driving style. But it seems to cost more to build a 200r, and I think they can take more hp.I had a 700r4 built for my car with 373 gears, the builder said it would take about 400hp. What ever you choose you will love driving the car on the interstate. Good luck John

I had a fully built 2004R behind an 800 rwhp big block and it was perfect when we removed it. It did have all the billet parts, built from Performance Transmissions.
The 2004R can be built stronger than the 700 at this time. It also has better gear ratios in my opinion, less drop between gears. Easier swap for a 4 speed or TH350/Powerglide as it's a direct replacement if you swap to a TH400 crossmember, the driveshaft and yoke remain the same without mods. If it's a small block car you'll need a TH400 crossmember that has the trans pad centered, or use one of the later trans mounts that has a single stud on the bottom instead of two bolts, as the stud will line up with one of the bolts holes in the crossmember. This is due to the TH400 crossmember being setup for a big block which is offset to the passenger side and the mount pad for the tranny is also offset.
I'm going to move this to the transmission section as I think you'll get more responses there.
Good luck with your swap, you'll love having overdrive!

I changed to a 200 4R, IMHO it is a better tranny, as it has a better OD ratio then the 700 and you can make WOT shifts into 4th, its also easier/cheaper to swap into your ride then the 700.
Both are good trannys when built right.
