My 3/4 ton '86 chevy has a open 14 bolt rear in it. I know there was like a 9.5" and 10.5" ring gear available in the 14 bolt, but have no idea which one I have (assume the smaller one). I am looking for a reasonably priced posi unit...I don't need a full race locker or anything drastic like that. I just need something with good street manners, quiet, and won't allow me to get stuck in a mud puddle  Thanks!

The 9.5 rear end has semi floating axles, like the 10 and 12 bolt car rear ends. The 10.5 rear end has full floating axles that bolt into the hub with 8 bolts. The axle can be removed without taking the wheel off.
If you have the 9.5 rear end then you can get a new Eaton posi for it, or the Governor Lock. If it is the 10.5 rear end then your best bet would be a Detroit Locker.

Thanks BGH graemlins/thumbsup.gif I guess GM went with the bigger ring gear so they wouldn't have to worry with warranty work from the 305 ripping the guts out of one  A locker sounds kind of drastic for this application...being a 2wd it isn't a hardcore offroad machine or anything. Aren't the lockers pretty pricy? Any other options? Thanks again.

The locker for the 10.5 isn't that expensive. This aplication just replaces the stock differential gears inside the differential case that you already have. If you have a army salvage yard close by you could get one from a military truck. The only other differential that I know of for the 10.5 is the Governor Lock. It will hold up fine with the 305, but they don't take too much abuse.

Check the local wrecking yards. I had a open rear in my 3/4T crew cab with a 4.10 gear. I picked up a complete 3.73 with a locker from a 3/4T van for $100.00. I swapped the gears into my housing. All I had to do was play with the backlash adjustment. The gear change made the truck drivable on the highway, and I was no longer afraid to drive on wet grass.

What could I expect pricewise for a locker?

I haven't checked in a while, but I think it is around $350.
