View Full Version : gears
government10 Dec 23rd, 04, 07:59 AM I looking to purchase some gears for my rear end. I found some gears forsale on this site that are perfect for my application. I currently have a non posi set up, and the gears I'm buying only come with the ring gear and the pinion gear. What else do I need in order to change my rear end into a posi.
HwyStarJoe Dec 23rd, 04, 08:50 AM If they're 3:xx ratio gears, you'll need a 3-series posi carrier to bolt the ring gear to.
You'll also need new carrier, pinion, axle bearing and seals, and a shim kit to set the backlash of the gears.
You can buy the posi carrier, bring the gears and the rearend to a reputable rearend shop and have them rebuild it for you.
67 Plum Dec 23rd, 04, 10:39 AM Which rear end are you building the 8.2 or 8.5?The 8.2 will not live long behind a 500hp bigblock and a 4speed.
69X11SS Dec 23rd, 04, 11:29 AM If you have a rear end that installs correctly in a 1st gen Camaro, you have either an 8.2, 10 bolt or and 8.875, 12 bolt. As 67 plum said, the 10 bolt won't hold up under the torque of a high horsepower engine. However, if you are just strret driving with an occasional trip down the 1/4, the 10 bolt will hold up fine.
government10 Dec 23rd, 04, 11:40 AM so what your saying is if 1st gen camaro's only came with 8.2 and 8.8's. When were the 8.5 introduced and will I be able to use the 8.5 if indeed this is the one I have. If anyone could maybe supply me with some part #'s or anything that would distinquish the two that'd be great
67 Plum Dec 23rd, 04, 12:09 PM The 8.5 came in 72 and up Nova. The nova rear in a direct bolt in for a 67-69 Camaro. The 70 up Camaros used them also but they are wider than a 67-69 rear.

government10 Dec 23rd, 04, 05:45 PM hey guys thanks for all the good info, here's what I'm looking at,

or auction # 7942766134
Its going in my 8.5 rearend. Even though these gears are out of a newer rear end will they still fit in my older rear end
government10 Dec 23rd, 04, 05:52 PM And another thing, would it be advantagious of me to keep my non posi carrier convert it into a locker if thats even possible and cheaper. Any thoughts? Or is it even possible.
Go69 Dec 24th, 04, 04:43 AM Please note that that carrier is a 30 spline unit! You can use it in an 8.5" housing, but you will need to get axles designed for a 12 bolt in a '67-'69 application as the original 8.2 & 8.5 ten bolts used 28 spline axles!
I was told once before that this would work, but you may want to verify with Big Gear Head as he would certainly know.
government10 Dec 24th, 04, 07:24 AM So how can I verify that my splines are indeed 28 or 30? When I do verify the # of splines, is it possible to intertwine the 28 with the 30 spline carrier or vise versa.
big gear head Dec 24th, 04, 08:25 AM The '67-'69 Camaro came with the 8.2 10 bolt. The 8.5 10 bolt from the '72 and later Nova will bolt into the early Camaro. The only thing that may have to be modified is the drive shaft. All 8.5 10 bolt rear ends had 28 spline axles up to '90. You can upgrade the 8.5 to 30 spline axles with a 30 spline Eaton posi and 29 5/8 inch 30 spline 12 bolt or after market axles. I am building an 8.5 just like this right now for a customer in California.
government10 Dec 24th, 04, 09:11 AM I hate to say this but is this supposed to be this complicated. Maybe I've just got so much good infor coming at me that I can't make sense of it. SOMEONE PLEASE CLARIFY!!
I have an 8.5 axle going into my 68 camaro, I'm looking to get a posi carrier, and 3:73 gears. Can someone tell me exactly what I"ll need in the exact order. (Ex. how many splines, etc....)
CarlC Dec 24th, 04, 05:48 PM BGH,
There is a mention above about a width difference between a 1st and 2nd gen housing. Is it overall, perch, or both?
big gear head Dec 24th, 04, 06:29 PM To install a set of 3.73 gears and a posi you will need the gear set, 3 series posi and a good installation kit. If you want to stay with the 28 spline axles you just need to get a posi with 28 spline axle gears in it. I recommend the Eaton posi. It is the best street/strip differential that I have found for the Chevy. The quality of the installation kit will have a big effect on the ease of installation. Some have good shims and some have bad shims. If your axles need to be replaced then you might as well go with the 30 spline axles and posi. The cost is the same for 28 or 30 splines.
As for the first and second gen Camaro rear ends, there is 1 inch difference in the over all width and about 3 inches difference in the location of the spring perches.
CurtiSS 69 Dec 26th, 04, 08:11 PM One more vote for the for the Eaton Posi with the 30 spline. The 30 spline axles are stronger which is good especially when c-clip type axles are used.
