I have found a couple 8.5'' posi units out of 79-80 Trans Ams and I was wandering what is the best way to remove the little bolt that holds the pin to keep the axles in without shearing them off and rendering the posi unit useless, and if I do shear one what would be the best way to remove the broken bolt without distroying the unit.Any help would be appreciated Thanks Camaro BOB

The bolt doesn't break when you try to remove it, it breaks from every day use. Just use a 6 point 5/16 wrench and take it out. If it is broke then there are a few things to try. If there are any threads left on the part that is in the hole you can use a scribe or other sharp object and try to turn it. Sometimes you can screw it out. If there are no threads left you can drill a 1/8 inch hole on the case where the other end of the bolt would be and use compressed air or a wire to push it out. If these don't work then use a die grinder and grind the end of the cross shaft away until you grind half way through the retaining bolt. Then you can drive the shaft out and remove what is left of the bolt. You will have to get a new shaft, but that is better than trashing the whole case.
