I am new to 4 spd muscle cars. I can drive a manual trans fine, been driving one for 10 years. But this is my first 4 spd Camaro. I was test driving a 68 camaro with a 4 spd, not sure if it is a Muncie or a Saginaw. It shifts smooth and drives smooth, but there is some gear whine noise. Not real loud or alarming. I am just used to slush boxes. My question is, is this normal for a 4 spd to whine alittle???

If it was an M22, you can be sure that there will be some whine, especially in the first 3 gears. Mine is pretty quiet though in 4th.

In most of the four speed Camaros that I have ridden in or driven, the transmissions do make some noise, especially in first, second, and third gears. The fact that the gears are 30+ years old combined with the fact that there isn't much sound insulation under the carpeting on old Camaros results in some gear noise being transmitted to the interior of the car. If the car has an M22 Rockcrusher transmission, it will whine a whole lot. I think it sounds pretty cool though. The transmission in my new truck even whines a little in first and second gears.

I can't really be for sure without hearing it (even then, I couldn't really be for sure), but if it makes a little whining noise, it is probably alright. If you are considering the purchase of this car, you might want to take it to a professional transmission mechanic to make sure that nothing really is wrong.
