I was cleaning on my rear end today and found about 2-3 inches from both sides of punkin a 1"x1" weld on backside.can anyone tell me why these would be there?

New axle tubes perhaps?

that is an old racer mod done to make the diff stronger. That is a sign that the diff was in a race car.
