My 67 with a 4 speed in it grinds into 4th. If I go nice and slow it won't. The local shop told me it was a worn syncro and that I should just replace the tranny when it goes totally out. Another guy said that there maybe an adjustment on muncie that could help. What should I do? A 5 speed with overdrive would be nice, but if I can fix this tranny and save some $$$, that would be nice too.

If it is a Saginaw, I'd probably replace it too. If it is a Muncie, I'd get a bearing and gasket kit for around $125 when they go on special and get a $25 rebuilding video. The front bearing retaining usually is grooved or wasted from throw-out bearing wear, add another $35 for that, plus a front bearing oil slinger nut for another $10. If you have worn shifting forks, broken gear teeth, worn sliders, or other worn hard parts, the cost starts adding up from there.

Of course, while it is all apart you are going to want a new clutch package for around $140, a crank pilot bushing $4, and resurface the flywheel for another $25. Isn't this sounding fun!

So should I take the guys advise and just wait until it goes out and get whole new tranny? My engine isn't orginal, but I think the tranny is. I figure if one thing isn't stock it doesn't matter if the others are.

I am thinking you have a bad input shaft bearing. The input shaft (4th gear) will be directly connected to the output shaft (via the 3-4 slider assy)only in 4th gear. All other gear loads go through the counter gear first before the power goes to the forward gears and then the output shaft. If there is a decent amount of slop in the input shaft bearing, you might have a problem going into 4th. Hope this helps.

The input bearing can be changed without getting into the trans. They will cause 4th gear problems and while you have the bearing out think about a .035 shim behind the bearing to tighten up the input play.
