View Full Version : best place to buy a munice
camp07 Oct 1st, 04, 06:48 PM Where is the best place to buy a brand new muncie 4 speed (for quality, originality etc.) I believe the one i want is called an m20-S. I know of this site that you can buy them from...http://www.5speeds.com/muncie.htm...is this a good place to buy from?
MY FIRST 69 Oct 1st, 04, 10:34 PM I used there rebuild video. Other then that I built an m22 using a super case and iron midplate. I bought everything off of ebay. I found someone selling shift forks and foundout they stocked eveything I needed. I used a junk m20 for a few of the reverse parts but thats about it. All in all i spent about the same. Id say $1600 is pretty good. If you are converting to a 4 speed from an auto I would consider buying a 5 speed, its not too much more.

Contact Wally at www.muncie4speed.com (http://www.muncie4speed.com) He is the moderator of the trans forum over at the Team Chevelle site and used to do it on this site till he got too busy. He is very fair and will work with you to get whatever you want, from a nicely rebuilt original to a completely new Auto Gear unit. He is an Authorized Auto Gear dealer.
327!275hp!Convt! Oct 2nd, 04, 02:51 AM Just type in "muncie" under "ebay motors." There are a number of places that rebuild quailty muncies. Or, there are always guys just selling good used muncies. There are all kinds of prices, parts for sell, etc. m20's m21's m22's
JimM Oct 2nd, 04, 05:20 AM I bought mine on ebay for $400. It is not a correct camaro trans, although if I knew more of what I was looking for it could probably be found.
On the subject of originality, muncies came is SS's and Z's, 327's got saginaw's.
camp07 Oct 3rd, 04, 08:32 AM thanks guys! my 1969 original SS with its original 350 will go great with a muncie (as far as originality goes right?) I Would like a brand new muncie so would the site i gave you guys eailier be a good place to buy it from?
JimM Oct 3rd, 04, 09:14 AM That's 3 original's in one sentence? sounds important... If it's original, it would all ready be there... and there always that tell-tale stamp on the front of the engine, once an original automatic, always an original automatic.
Like mine... love my Muncie, but the id on the motor is still EE, and that was an automatic.
Also, there IS no new muncie... the factory in Indiana reverted to corn 20 years ago.
Jonesy Oct 3rd, 04, 10:41 AM I used Kajun Enterprises for my Muncie. I had him put together one for my and insisted on the correct 1969 maincase, tailshaft and side cover. I got one with an Oct 68 date (wrong VIN but who cares) as I wanted one from my build period.
Here's their website:

camp07 Oct 3rd, 04, 06:58 PM ummm actually there are many places to buy brand new muncies...which is why my question was which is the best place buy new muncies from.
camp07 Oct 3rd, 04, 07:10 PM Anyways...what i will have when i am done with my car's restoration is...a true and original 1969 SS-350 Camaro. It will have it's freshly and correctly rebuilt, original 350 ci. Backing up that 350 will be a new muncie 4-speed (i will have the original auto tranny stored away correctly). Tell me if i'm right, but a muncie 4-speed was an option on my car back in '69 right? Isn't that why alot of guys put these trannies in there camaros...because these trannies are correct for the car? That is one of the reasons why i am putting a muncie 4-speed in my camaro (other than the obvious reason that i want a manual over an auto).
camp07 Oct 3rd, 04, 07:11 PM Thanks guys!
69CamaroRS/SS Oct 3rd, 04, 07:53 PM I just did a conversion on my 69 RS/SS
It was originally a 300HP 350 with a Powerglide
Then it had a TH-350 in it for about 22 years or so.
Now it has a Muncie M20 and A mild 350 aprx.390-400hp
In my opinion it is one of the best mods that i have done to the car (fun factor)
I did run a worse 1/4mile ET, but it was due to excessive tire spin and that pesky 1 legger
that will soon be getting a locker for now.
As far as fun on the street..... 4 speed is the only way to go In my opinion!!!
for drag racing.... go with an AUTO

camp07 Oct 4th, 04, 03:43 PM i agree with you 69CamaroRS/SS on the fact that a muncie is good for the street. That is a big reason why i am getting one...b/c i will really only be driving it on the street
