I took the 68 out for a cruise today. I stopped at a red light and sat waiting for it to change. When it did, I tried to step on the gas, and nothing happened. She wouldn't go anywhere. I ended up coasting her over to the side of the road and started looking for the cause of this disaster. I looked at the fluid level and it appeared to be full, I checked the shifter cable and it seemed to be intact, I checked the shifter itself (Hurst Pro Street) and it also seemed to be O.K., and nothing was leaking from the bottom. She was running just fine until now. I don't know what in the world happened, but I guess she'll be down for a while until I can locate the source of the trouble. I can see right now that this is going to be a really great summer :( :(

How much work have you done on the tranny so far? Which parts replaced? Could be something let go indside the trans or the torque converter gave up. Is it making any funny noises when the engine running or is it dead quiet?

is the driveshaft still there? ;)

my Dad had torque convertor bolts loosen up once
and we just had to buy new bolts for
his pickup truck, flexplate/flywheel to convertor bolts.
when we installed the new ones we also put blue threadlocker on them,so they would not vibrate loose again .
Hope its something simple. graemlins/clonk.gif

Transmision makes no funny noises at all. It came out of an 85 camaro (so i was told). Once installed it ran fine all last year, thn all of a sudden, it gave in. The trans fluid doesn't appear to be burnt or discolored either. Me and a friend plan to drop it monday. Then we'll be able to look at the bolts on the torque converter.

Kinda sounds like a pump related thing.....

Ya know, I'm sitting here debating whether or not I should try and have this tranny rebuilt, or go to the junk yard and buy another one for around $75. A rebuilt tranny should last me for a very long time, but it will cost me between $500 to $800 easy. A junk yard tranny will definitely be a lot cheaper, but I will have no way of knowing what type of abuse its been through or how long it will last. The one that just died on me was bought used from an 85 camaro and I've had this one for about a year. If you guys were in my shoes, what would you do

Not trying to sway you one way or the other, but should you make the choice to replace it, I sell the TCI Streetfighter TH350 part number 311000 for $700 plus truck freight, which should be around the $100-125 mark. The freight charges have jumped lately with the fuel surcharge, they used to be a bit lower, but TCI has some decent freight charges worked out with the trucking companies. FYI, Summit sells them for $720 plus freight, Doug Herbert has them for $730 plus freight, Jeg's is also $720 plus freight. They all three claim freight of $85, but that is not really true now. Or, pull it on out, pick a weekend, and drive on over here, I rebuild them for $175 plus parts! smile.gif

like oldani says rebuild it or buy a tci, out here in maine i can get a th350 rebuilt with a transgo shift kit minus a convertor for 350 bucks total, 450 bucks with stock convertor, but it would be well worth your time not to keep changing out junkyard trannys, like you said you do not know what happend in there past lives, anyway goodluck but i would rebuild yours

Even though I'm sorta strapped for cash right now, a fresh rebuild sounds like the best route to go. Somehow I've always managed to come up with the money for everything else that broke on this car, I guess this will be no exception graemlins/sad.gif
Thanks!!!!

It doesn't sound like your car is particularly hi-performance.

If you do the R&R, you should be able to have somebody local rebuild that box for $200-300 bucks. Best of both worlds, rebuilt tranny, short money.

As you know already, the $75 boneyard box is just a crapshoot!!

just my $.02

If you are intrested in a brand new TCI 10" street fighter converter let me know. It ran me $300.00 when I bought it. Its never been used, still in box. I bought a 5 speed and want to get rid of the converter.

You guys are right. It would be better to make the financial sacrifice and have it rebuilt than waste both time and money using one from the local boneyard. The only problem is that I've never rebuilt a trans before, and the guys who run the local shops around here are not what I would consider the most trustworthy people in the world. I have a very nice video that gives step by step instructions on how to do it, but first I will have to find all the special tools to do the job.... :( I think that maybe my best bet is to go for broke and order a brand new one straight from the manufacturers.... Thanks guys! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

garfield,

So whats the choice? Rebuild or Buy manufactored?
Me myself, Id go the rebuild way. I have a few friends have bad experience with their TCI's and B&M's. Trouble as in within a year, they tear up, and cannot get a break on the repair or warranty issues.

Id take up Oldani Motorsports offer and have him build it. I've watched his posts, and the brother definitely seems to have his stuff together graemlins/thumbsup.gif

you have a 700R4 in there right? it might be a bit more expensive to build, but definitely worth the drive, ease of mind, and the $$$$$

Good Luck!

Jerry

By the way... were you running any type of tranny cooling system on your car?

Sorry to hear about the trans failure.
Looks like now is the perfect time to just change over to the T56 six speed we all know, love and want. Check out www.T56kit.com (http://www.T56kit.com) so we can bolt it into your car....
