I made a couple quick measurements of the two rearends I have just for informational purposes.

I measured just the center sections of an 8.2" and an 8.5" rearend from the cover mounting surface to the end of the driveshaft yoke with no U-joint installed in the yokes. Once in a while someone will ask of they need to change (lengthen or shorten) their driveshaft when they're swapping rearends.

Correct me on these if I'm wrong.

The 8.2" measures 13.25" or 13 1/4" from cover mounting surface to end of yoke.
The 8.5" measures 14.5" or 14 1/2" from cover mounting surface to end of yoke.

There's a 1.25" difference between the two. I don't have a 12-bolt rear to measure. I wanted to include that information too so people will have a better idea what they'll have to do when they swap rearends.

Thanks for the info. How people do the swap without changing the length of the driveshaft is unknown to me, smile.gif .

People use a '70-'81 driveshaft, its an inch shorter than a 1st gen driveshaft.

Thank you HwyStarJoe fopr the info !!!!
