: Four speed swap for a four speed??
HOTRODSRJ Feb 25th, 05, 01:27 AM The wife wants an automatic in the 69 ragtop for this summer. She is tired of the four speed Muncie whereas her clutch knee is a tad lame.
I know that I will have to change pedals as well....but before I start the 700R transfusion...anyone got any tips or dos or don'ts.
One thing I am worried about is the tailpipe/muffler package (with a H pipe) all tucked under the Xbrace underneath and getting the 700R up in there to fit. Anyone have any ideas or comments about that?
Thanks for the help.....as usual.
BPOS Feb 25th, 05, 06:47 AM The tranny should fit just fine. The only problem I see is a potential for the new/relocated crossmember to interfere with your existing exhaust system. The front of the xbrace is behind the rear of the trans, and there should be no interference with it.
pdq67 Feb 25th, 05, 07:00 AM And, I think all you have to do is just remove the clutch pedal too so you shouldn't have to hassle with a new automatic brake pedal assembly...
Anybody else on this??

KevinW Feb 25th, 05, 07:12 AM The pivot bar that goes through both pedals at the support would not be correct. The clutch provides 1/2 of the spacer distance, so without a spacer, the brake pedal will move side to side. Auto pedals have a full size spacer.
Of course HOTRODSRJ could just PM me for the auto pedal I have just laying in a box that I am not going to use :D
ZZ430DropTop67RS Feb 25th, 05, 07:26 AM Being a left-foot braker, I always switch to the auto pedal.
pdq67 Feb 25th, 05, 01:18 PM He, He!!
I'd just "shade-tree" it and make a spacer!!
And I never left-foot brake...... Even with an automatic!!
And one thing I dearly hate is somebody that rests their left foot on the clutch pedal!!!
I figure that if they are too darn lazy to put their left foot where it belongs, they had better be driving a "slush-box"!! Just a heck of a pet-peave of mine is all.....

I was born with 2 feet, and by gosh I'm going to use them!
LOL
KevinW Feb 25th, 05, 03:15 PM Oops, small error on previous post. The shaft that holds the brake pedal pivot is actually part of the clutch pedal (welded!). So if you take the clutch pedal off, the brake pedal no longer has a pivot shaft. Auto pivot shafts are seperate and have clips on either end to hold it in place.
HOTRODSRJ Feb 27th, 05, 06:49 AM Thanks for the info guys.
Another question. What automatic shifter(s) work with the standard 69 console (for four speeds)hole the best? Any suggestions welcome except for "racing" shifters. Remember....my wife is driving this car.
And....does anyone offer a turnkey shifter package/kit for this conversion?
Thanks.

CFunK Feb 27th, 05, 08:25 AM Wonder if you could get this shifter to fit without much hassle.
B&M Unimatic (http://www.bmracing.com/index.php?id=products&sid=4&cat=2&subcat=1&pid=14)
rpol78 Feb 27th, 05, 11:14 AM Why not go with the 200R4 since it should be a direct replacement and you don't have to shorten the driveshaft? Ricks carries part number RC-179 to convert a standard automatic shifter for the 4 speed automatic and CP-73 is the console plate with the correct markings. Hope this helps.
KevinW Feb 27th, 05, 11:22 AM Steve, like rpol78 said. Buy a repro factory style shifter and use the shiftworks conversion for 4speed automatics.
HOTRODSRJ Feb 27th, 05, 01:54 PM Thanks for the stock suggestion....so I would need the stock shifter, cable, and conversion kit and top plate included...right?
Has anyone adapted a B&M or Hurst cable shifter to the top of th console for something different. The stock shifter is just okay in my book, but likely perfect for my wife tho.
