Camaro is the only bolt in for a 12 bolt 70-72 I think. Trans Ams will fit but I think internals are different.

Why do you want the 12 bolt? Is it for bragging rights? The 8.5" 10 bolt can be made quite stout!
One of your neighbors runs one deep into the 8's.

With an eaton posi and 30 spline axles, welded tubes, etc...it can be one stout rear end.

The '70 Z-28 and SS Camaro 12 bolt is the only one that will bolt in a '72 Camaro. Wrager is right about the 8.5 10 bolt. It can be built almost as strong as the 12 bolt.

Wrager/ Big Gear Head,

I have never had much luck with 10 bolts behind a 454. What can i do to make it live happily back there? The car will never run full slicks....maybe a set of cheaters (Hoosier Quick Time Pros) once in awhile. I have never built a rear before. I just know what broke and what did not. Please explain how to beef up the 8.5" 10 bolt.

I parted out a 72 nova SS with a 8.5 rear end that will bolt in my 69 coupe. I wonder if a Nova rear end will fit your gen.2 camaro??

The 8.5 10 bolt can be upgraded with a new 30 spline Eaton posi, which is much stronger than the original Traction Lock. Moser 30 spline axles are MUCH stronger than the stock 28 spline axles. The axle tubes should be welded to the center casting if you plan on getting much traction. The T/A cover strengthens the housing in two ways, it strengthens that large hole in the back side and it supports the bearing caps. Always use the highest quality parts, like Timken bearings, when building any rear end. Wheel hop will kill even the best rear end, so keep it under controll. If you want prices on any of this let me know. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

sorry to horn in on this post, but it's semi relevant. big gear head, are the 30 spline moser axles substantially stronger than moser 28 spline, in an 8.5? same question about the eaton posi, 28 vs 30. i'm running an 8.5, and love it, BTW, but am looking to the future. basically, is it well worth changing over to 30 spline? thanks. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

If you already have 28 spline Moser axles and a Eaton posi then you will only be increasing the strength by about 30% by going to 30 spline axles. Because the 30 spline stuff costs the same as the 28 spline stuff then there is no reason to get the 28 spline stuff if you are replacing everything anyway. The 28 spline Moser axles are about 30% stronger than the stock 28 spline axles and the 30 spline Moser axles are about 30% stronger than the Moser 28 spline axles.

thanks for the input, bgh. i'm running a factory (but rebuilt)corporate posi and the stock 28 spline axles. everthing seems fine, and i know a couple of guys that ran the same set up in thier big block drag cars, with no trouble (can you say dodging the bullet?). mines a smallblock, but its making close to 500 horse i would guess, so i'm sure the axles would be the first thing to go. i was thinking of just putting in moser axles and leaving the posi, untill i have trouble, (for $ reasons) but then i'm stuck with 28 splines. maybe i should just wait untill i can do both the posi and the axles, and be done with it. decisions decisions. whats your opinion on this, are the 28 spline mosers/eaton posi going to hold up in a 3300# low eleven second car? (i know it depends on how it hooks up) or am i taking my chances? thanks again, and sorry to slightly side track the post graemlins/beers.gif

The 2nd gen has the springs about 3 inches different, and, the overall width is about one inch more.

I can't really say what will break first or if it will break at all. I have seen things that I thought would never break that broke and I have seen things that I was sure would break that didn't.

But, when i replaced my leaky pinion seal last year i over tightened the pinion/yoke nut,and it crushed the crush collar a lil too much,
what a stupid design, :( why weren't these solid, plus shims so you could not easily overtighten. {at least if your a "moron"
:( }

I'm glad Freddie (BGH) responded. Honestly, every thing I 've learned...I've learned from him (and a few others).
