Hey guys,
finaly took the rear end cover off my 12 bolt....and what do I find...a brand new spool rear with 456 gears...a bit much for the street....back in 72 they were making this thing into a drag car and just lost intrest, (or ran out of money) so it sat until I bought it 2 years ago.....they put the rear end together and it has never been run...it has Summers Brother axle shafts...my question is A) what do I need to buy? B)what gears should I go with? (this is a big block with a T400 trans) C) is it safe to buy used or should I stick to new?...thanks in advance gang!

I was in the same situation as you, the car I bought also had a spool with a 5:13 gear and sommers bros. axles. The axles in my car had the stock 30 spline configuration so I just had to get a new posi unit and gears. I bought the new Eaton posi and Richmond 3:73 gears on e-bay. I got the posi for 275.00 and the gears for 125.00. The installation cost was 155.00 parts and labor. Hope this helps.... graemlins/beers.gif

I second the Power Train Parts in NY recommendation. I bought my posi, axles, gears and rebuild kit from them for $770. Great place, and everything arrived just as they said it would. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I believe there is a gentleman on this site by the name of "Big Gear Head" that might know where to get some of the stuff your looking for. You might want to e-mail him.....

Theres also Toms Differentials in Paramount California and a shop named Pro Gear in San Diego California.
