Hi fellas. Can anyone tell me how to tell if the torque converter is faulty If the trans is out of the car. Its a TH400 trans and a 10" converter. Thanks

I don't know how to tell if its bad or not. If you are intrested in a TCI 10" street fighter, let me know. Its brand new, still in box. I'm switching to a 5 speed. I will give you a good deal. The converter was $300.00 when I ordered it.

About the only thing you can check without cutting it open is endplay. And, unless you measure it when new, you may not really know if it has ballooned or not. A lot of metallic debris in the fluid, or parts rattling around inside are a few obvious things too, but there will be some normal noise if you shake it around.

You can check the stator one way clutch too. Get a pair of internal lock ring pliers and and use it to grip the stator splines. The stator should only spin freely in one direction.

PDQ, that is a test that only verifies that it may hold under a few foot pounds of torque, but it in no way will duplicate performance under engine torque, remember the sprag holds against whatever the motor throws at it, the sprag is splined to the stator support in the front pump. I have seen sprags slip and you would never have known unless you cut open the converter and see the marks on the inner race. It is not really too reliable of a test.
