Hi Guys, I just installed an m-20 which a freind and I overhauled. The only new gear I replaced was reverse. Now I have a intermittent chatter while running the car in gear on stands (mostly 3rd & 4th). Could I have left out, or improperly installed, a spacer or thrust washer? Any help appreciated. JT

It's tough to determine what you mean by chatter. If everything turns well with no binding or snags, put the car on the road and drive it carefully at first and listen for noise. Driving the car on stands allows the wheels and driveline to float and cause all kinds of noise. If you used a manual and put all the pieces in it you should be fine. The most mistakes I see people make are not putting all the needle bearings in the cluster gear and correctly installing the spacers, the mainshaft to input gear bearings need a good goop of grease to keep them in so that they don't fall out on assembly and the thrust washers on the cluster and reverse idler should be there. Otherwise a Muncie is fairly easy to rebuild.

Thanks GMJim. I pulled trans today. I'm backtracking now to check all the notes you mentioned. I just might be in a panic as I haven't yet road tested it. Thanks again, Joe

One step at a time. Follow the manual. There are a few little tricks to easy assembly. E-mail me if you need any help.
