: First Gen 12 Bolt Questions
trisprint Jan 29th, 04, 02:15 PM I have a 68 Camaro with a 12 bolt rear end and I am not sure if it's the rear end for a Camaro It shows signs of some removed metal which looks like it might have been a Chevelle rear end. So my question is what is the difference between the to I know that a chevelle is a little wider but how much? Also is there a way that I can tell if the posi unit is a 3 or 4 series carrier? tongue.gif

big gear head Jan 30th, 04, 09:37 AM The '65-'67 Chevelle rear end is 60 inches wide overall, the same as the '67-'69 Camaro rear end. The '68-'72 Chevelle rear end is 61 inches wide overall, the same as the '70-'81 Camaro rear end. The casting number on the 3 series posi is EDB30140 and the number on the 4 series posi is EDB30174.
trisprint Jan 31st, 04, 11:42 AM Ok pulled off cover and the numbers on the carrier ED 30140 PM1 353
on the ring gear GM 3862525 11 41 4 69 with 41 teeth on the pinion gear GM 38262369 or 23693862 41 11 with 11 teeth if I am doing my math right thats 3.73 gears on a 3 series carrier with an over all mesurment of 60 inches axel face to axle face Is the a posi or limited slip diff? and I will be swaping the gears for a pair better for road trips if any one is intrested email me. graemlins/beers.gif
big gear head Jan 31st, 04, 06:50 PM Posi is Eaton's name for their limited slip differential. Auburn uses Sure Grip, Dana uses Power Lock, Ford uses Traction Lock..... They are all just trade names for limited slip differentials.
jl8dale Jan 23rd, 07, 04:13 PM Trisprint,
I know this is old, but do you still have the 3.73 gears available?

1969 Camaro Dude Jan 23rd, 07, 04:20 PM I don't know what year rearend you have but if they used a 69 chevelle unit it shouldn't be hard to tell because there are to big round ears for the upper control arms and would be hard to grind off.
diggnagain Apr 24th, 10, 11:23 AM I am new to this site and have a question I was hoping someone could help me with.
I have a new in the box carrier ED 30140 PM1 that was in my dad stuff. the box is from general motors corp and is dated 5/4/76. what i need is to know if this is something worth trying to sell or not and if it is what would be a fair price. I do not have a lot of knowlage when it comes to automotive stuff so any help would be great thank you.

big gear head Apr 24th, 10, 11:50 AM That is a 3 series Eaton Posi for the Chevy car 12 bolt. It is worth selling. This is a very popular differential and should be worth anywhere from $200 to $450, depending on it's condition.

What recommendations for a 12 bolt would you guys give ?
Eric Kammerer May 4th, 10, 07:41 AM I'd recommend you start a new thread, instead of piggybacking on a 6 year old thread that got piggybacked a few weeks ago.
You can also do a search, because this gets discussed a lot. Here's a few:

big gear head May 4th, 10, 08:20 AM There are a few options. You can rebuild the 10 bolt. You are not going to hurt the 10 bolt with a 327 and automatic transmission on street tires if the 10 bolt is built right. Another option is the 8.5 Nova 10 bolt, which can be built almost as strong as the 12 bolt. Then there are the rebuilt 12 bolt rear ends, which are getting pretty expensive these days. And then there are the after market rear ends, like the Moser 12 bolt. These are the most expensive and also the strongest.
