I have a 69 L78 original car with a ZD radiator tag. It is a straight neck radiator and had only 2 or 3 cores previously. I thought all L78s would have a 4 core so I had the radiator recored with a 4 core. Clutch fan now doesn't fit in without removing water pump studs. It is so close I cannot believe it won't hit the radiator. I read that all L78s with a 4.10 would have the 4 core. Is the ZD correct for my car and should I have it recored again to a 3 core? I have a 4.10 rearend in the car. How did they fit the four core in? How does the curved neck radiator allow the clutch fan to fit?

L78's used the same radiator as the L34, and L35's which are 3 core readiators unless you ordered the HD cooling system which changed it to the bent neck 4 core radiators.

As to why you don't have enough clearance with a recored radiator, I would suspect that there is a difference in the height of the mounting brackets that brings the 4 core radiators closer to the core support. ZD is the proper code for a 4 speed 396 radiator, and it's a 3 core unit. UY (and UZ?) are the codes for a heavy duty 4 core bent neck radiator. Which was used on all 396's with A/C and all the COPO cars, (L72, ZL1)
